Have you personally made a statement about blacklivesmatter on LinkedIn? Why or why not?

Great businesses are based on secrets.
Nobody needs to know how I feel.
(That's the beauty of this app)

Unless I can monetize my post, why would I write one supporting BLM? There's no benefit, only cost (time) and risk (potential disagree-ers, or even people who think I didn't bow my head low enough.)

@D3 - I hear you and I have certainly felt the same in past. My thoughts changed only when I educated myself on history and tried to empathize with my black friends, coworkers.

I promise you, your thoughts will change on - “nothing is enough”.

I did. Message is too important and relevant to the work place. If you’re a minority, the work place is probably one of the top areas where race impacts you on a day to day basis. It’s also been the #1 source of people texting me or wanting quick calls to get perspective on what’s going on... So kind of made sense.

Don’t care about BLM unfortunately. It’s a economic not a race issue 🤷‍♂️

Does the US owe more reparations to Native Americans or black descendants of slaves?

No. I use it for professional networking. My opinion on cultural events doesn’t belong there.

I don’t want to be a LinkedIn Karen

Who is this Karen everyone keeps mentioning?

like

I’ve never made a post on LinkedIn lol

likefunny

No, I made a donation, actions speak louder than words

$$ for support is just ONE element.

This is also about changing culture, educating people, providing support to and enabling our black communities, checking our own biases.

Systemic changes need a mass movement.

How old are you?

like

I think asking about age in response to this question is immature.

I think equating age with maturity is immature.

like

I’m black and don’t subscribe to victimology.

likeuplifting

No way, just about every white person that tries to help is belittled for supporting the movement. The attitude is it’s never enough. While I support the movement I don’t like the approach of the people. It should be more inclusive.

like

Obviously you wouldn't share it in the open, but the attitude of "stay silent and watch it fail" contributes to the failing...that's why silence makes you complicit. You don't have to scream your support from the mountain tops, but if you see some racist, sexist, or -phobic shit going on, call it out. If people stopped allowing it, the behaviors would stop.

I did not and I won't for multiple reasons :

1 - All Lives matter and equally
2 - I don't like to be part of mainstream media campaings
3 - I don't think we are fixing the root of the problem. It is a social economic justice issue and not a matter of life and death. The racial bias is an expected reaction to social demographic challenges.

If every CEO pleadging BLM agrees to invest effectively in education and healthcare for under served communities. the problem goes away. It easy to send statements from a Golf course or from a well guarded mansion.
If every HR executive writing mémoires about BLM enforces the equal opportunity in an effective manner (instead of just enough not to be sued), we will see progress... Think of your college hires and and how accessible are these universities!
If every minority leader that succeeded in the system gives back to their community and help others climb the ladder we would see more progress
Last but not least, If the people of America weren't so attached to their guns, the police would not be fearful for their lives and shooting left and right. Social issues exist in every first world country, mostly in this one, people get shot !

like

Wow.
1. no one is saying all lives don't matter. Black lives matter means Black lives matter ALSO. Society has not valued Black lives as much as white lives.
Skipping 2.
3. I'm not sure what you're arguing here. I'd argue the racial bias begat the economic disparity. And it certainly is a matter of life and death for Black and POC folks.

This country was built on the backs and blood of Black folks- first as slaves, then as prisoners in a corrupt and disgusting incarceration system that sprung up after the 13th amendment ended slavery, where people arrested for even minor (or made-up) offenses were essentially enslaved to make up for the loss of slaves. One could argue peonage still occuring today - Black people are incarcerated more than 5x the rate of white people, and that population is used for free labor. Black folks are also 3x as likely to be killed by police than white folks.
There was no chance for Black families to build wealth, they have been busy trying to survive.

This issue requires societal change... So sure a few individuals can take action as your describe. But our entire society needs to change policy, incentives, laws, and minds. And EY7's got it - we can make progress on multiple tracks at the same time.

I have not. although i believe BLM may have a few decent points, many injustices they focus on can be explained by causes irrelevant to race.

like

i know. many people are driven by emotion over logic, which is why trump will win again and why racial tensions will just get worse.

like

I didn’t care about it in the past. The movement has made me care about it, though. I didn’t make a post, though, as I felt it would be disingenuous.

Donated, supporting local businesses, and educating myself instead

likeuplifting

Also does anyone know the financial breakdown of how BLM uses their donations? I saw a Q&A thread where one of the directors refused to share any info so it made me wary.

like

I read about that too. Apparently they get around it by charging high transaction fees that go unreported.

Look up ActBlue, they’re the platform that BLM uses for their finances.

like

I dont care about the movement. I actually reduced the time spent on the internet during the whole thing since it was everywhere and it got tiring to even constantly scroll past them

i also dont feel the need to virtue signal (which is pretty much 99% of BLM posts)

like

curious why you don't care?

like

I did. I wont work for an organization that wont hire me because of it. In every interview I ever have in the future- I'll be asking about the company's COVID response and their intersectionality initiatives.

likeupliftingsmart

What are you looking for in COVID response?

And why specifically intersectionality?

funny

I did not. I’m completely supportive and did consider lending my voice but as a white male I’m wrestling with the thought that people may assume I’m virtue signalling and I’d not want it to be construed that way. Instead I’ve made a donation (privately, and not told many people) and instead used my voice within my teams to have some discussions to share and educate. I’ve also reached out to people in my network and had some valuable conversations which have further opened my eyes and helped me to learn.

like

No, because LinkedIn is not a platform for social issues. It’s for career/professional networking.

like

I cant even.

funny

No.

like

I have. Because I believe we all need to do our bit - my post from yesterday has just about 500 views and a bunch of reshares, my hope is that I am spreading awareness.
