My view is you have two sides of the coin: new companies / startups launching are very much looking at compensation that is value based and not location based. I currently work for a company that does this, an engineer with the same role and title in London makes the exact same as one located in Bangkok. I believe this to be the right answer for remote companies that don’t require someone’s physical presence in any one place, and adjustments are made where an employee IS physically required to be present in a certain city. On the other side of the coin are companies that have paid people based on their geography. Trying to move to a new model is an absolute logistical nightmare and could take a long time of careful planning (budget wise, communication wise, and attrition wise). Some people would see their salary drop, others increase. It’s a complete disruption to an existing workforce and could cripple a company if not done right. You, as a solo individual, cannot be treated as a special case until the entire workforce plan is addressed.
Thanks for adding here. Great perspectives. I know I’m in that second bucket 😬.
I’m curious if we’ve seen any examples of companies in that geo bucket consider or actually adjust to a different model. I know it’s a nightmare and maybe not even possible for a firm like PwC that’s a network of member firms (there’s no global entity and we won’t be able to dictate what each country pays their employees), but I’ve noticed this topic coming up more and more and curious how companies will respond.
Times are changin’!
I know we’re in a new world with the pandemic and maybe companies just haven’t caught up yet. I’m curious if your company or others your aware of have addressed this yet.
