COBRA provides you 60 days to opt in and then it’s retroactive. So say you get sick/injured 45 days after your insurance ends, you can choose to pay for the COBRA coverage and it will go back and cover from the last day of your insurance coverage. If nothing happens, you haven’t shelled out the money.
I carried COBRA for a short while, but I’m sure you know that’s horrifically expensive. That was also before Obamacare (I don’t know if you can carry that for such a short time frame). You have to weigh your risk tolerance, medical situation and finances to determine if COBRA is the way to go. If you go sans insurance, don’t plan a ski trip. Or cross the street. ;)
What VP1 said. Also, most plans extend coverage for the full month, so if you quit on the first of the month you'll usually have coverage for the rest of it. You should check with your insurer, but that plus cobra 60 days gives you almost three months.
Not 100% sure how pre-existing conditions factor into this, but that might also factor in if you need to show continuous coverage so the next insurance company doesn’t reject covering you for any current/chronic conditions?
I am in the same boat and have been grappling with the same question. Looked into Obama Care but it’s more expensive than COBRA. I have also looked into domestic partnership so I can piggy back on my bf’s insurance but after more reading it seems that messes with your taxes. Let us know what you end up doing!
My last job didn’t give you health insurance for the first month (I know 🙄) so I got short term health insurance just in case anything major happened. It was through ehealth.
Went through the state reduced rate insurance options. If you're in California, there's Covered California which gives you options.
Yes, I went on my husband’s (cliche, yet helpful)
