Hi. If you think that you can’t share your rationale for not getting the vaccine without getting mocked, then maybe you should rethink whether it’s a good rationale. I assume it’s not a medical reason since you indicated you’re deciding whether or not to do it.

A27, cite?
I have the vaccine and am 100% pro-vaccine. However, I also completely understand where anti-vax people are coming from and don’t judge you/them - I get it. It is your right to do whatever you want with and to your body (as long as you’re not causing harm to yourself or others). If people judge, that’s on them, not you. When asked about it, just say nothing or simply say that you’re not vaccinated yet. If people are nosey and ask why not or when you’re getting it, just say you haven’t been able to schedule an appointment yet.
This post is about the COVID-19 vaccine. “Anti-vax” in this context specifically means anti-COVID-vaccination. I was simply stating that I understand why (some) people don’t feel comfortable getting the vaccine. There are various reasons people choose not to vaccinate (for COVID-19), some valid, some not. Breaking news, it is possible to understand where someone is coming from and not agree with them. My judgment of another person’s actions or decisions will only cause me suffering - it won’t change anyone or anything. What I can do is share my opinion and hope to share a perspective that opens their eyes and maybe change their views - but I never expect this to be the outcome so I choose not to stress over it or judge. Just sharing a different perspective 😇.
I just don’t think you’re going to dodge judgment on this. It’s indefensible and I think you should just accept the well deserved discomfort.
Agree completely with AA1 and AA2.
"Don't you know the flu is more deadly." Or "it's not really that bad, only 500,000 people have died. That's barely below the death toll in the Civil War."
Yeah, majority of those people died due to co-morbidity issues and didn’t have many years left in them…
“I don’t believe in science” also “did you guys know there is a strong consensus that the earth is flat?”
Coach
A3, no... there is plenty of science. How are you like this?
The reason you're uncomfortable in these situations is because you know your position is indefensible.
Exactly!
I happen to be vaccinated, but really don’t like all of this talk about personal medical information. It sets a dangerous precedent. I would say as little as possible while not being dodgy. “Oh, yeah, I am hoping to make an appointment soon.”
That’s been my exact MO
Say you’re waiting to give people at high risk a chance to get in line first since you have no friends and never leave the house.
We’re well past those categories at this point. Everyone is eligible now because everyone should be getting the vaccine ASAP to minimize further death and variant development.
Tell the truth and receive the social shame and derision you deserve
Thankfully, enjoying the imagined anger of strangers is a pastime you can undertake remotely within the safe confines of your own mind. Enjoy!
I’m with you OP. I’ve been telling people that I worked in a pharmacy for four years before law school, and I saw drugs recalled all the time YEARS after they were approved by the FDA. Have you read about the Pfizer manufacturing investigations by the FDA in Baltimore because some batches were tainted? I also don’t understand why people are saying that this personal decision about putting something foreign into your blood stream could have implications on others through mutations etc. if y’all are so confident in the vaccine, you can’t say that non-vaccinated people are selfish.
On the other hand, I’m not aware of anyone on this thread articulating a good reason to believe there are likely chances of long term effects for this vaccine, or any examples of previously-unknown long term effects of other vaccines. Using examples like smoking, DDT, and arthritis drugs isn’t comparable enough to be persuasive at all.
Coach
I’m in the school of thought that everyone should get vaccinated, BUT I also don’t like everyone talking about this. Honestly I don’t want work to know when I’m fully vaccinated bc I don’t want to be forced back to work any sooner. Can everyone just please shush! Lol
I’m curious, for people saying they’re “not getting it right now,” exactly what data point(s) are you waiting on or looking for? We’re close to passing 1 billion doses administered worldwide, over the span of ~5 months.
If that’s the threshold, then just say you’re not getting it. People like hiding behind “want to see more data,” when by the time that data is available, the pandemic will be over (thanks to those who chose to get the vaccine), and there will be no need to get it.
If you’re going to have stupid potential opinion about the vaccine, be ready to accept the consequences.
If the vaccine protects the host and a sufficient number of folks are getting vaccinated to allow for things to open up, then why are so many of y'all fussed about everyone getting the vaccine.
Do you have the same view about folks who don't get the annual flu vaccine? What about those who haven't received other recommended vaccines?
I don't think there is a need for folks to be concerned about getting the vaccine (I am vaccinated), especially for the educated in our society, but I am really disappointed with the attitude that someone can be viewed as less if they decide not to be vaccinated. I expect everyone commenting is a lawyer and if any group of folks should do better in handling opposing views, we should be right up there with those who are understanding of counter-viewpoints.
Oh so you can run around and infect me (with underlying conditions)? Awesome. Hence why I got the vaccine. Hope you enjoy harming immunocompromised people and creating new variants that screw us over in the future.
New idea: act like you had no idea there was a vaccine and get really excited. Then explain that you’ve been working really really hard and hasn’t read the news in a while.
I’m having this same exact issue. So I sympathize with you and all the judgment you’ve received on this post. When this happens, I just choose to say nothing even though it can be awkward. There have been a few times where I’ve been asked directly and I’ll just say I haven’t gotten it. If they pry, at first I said i didn’t want to take a vaccine from someone who is more vulnerable or elderly but now that it’s more accessible I’ll say I’m not sure I want to get it for personal health reasons (although the real reason is more so the lack of research into long term effects and the lowered standards for emergency authorization). If people want details beyond that, I think it says a lot about them and their lack of respect for privacy so you I think you could reasonably say you’d rather not discuss it further. Good luck continuing to navigate this, it’s definitely not fun
The spike proteins you’ll get 10-100-1000 times the dose of if you contract COVID?
Take the vaccine, you jerk.
Either tell the truth and accept the judgment or just lie and say there are medical issues you’d rather not discuss?
Next time someone asks you “have you gotten the vaccine” your response should be “why? Have you?”
A vaccinated individual, who assumingly did it since they believe in the science, SHOULD NOT GIVE A D*MN about anyone else — they’re protected (right?). This just hi lights the unnecessary nosy, and gossipy individuals that social media has bred who forgot how to have conversations about anything other than Covid!
Anyone ask you if you got your flu shot last year? Measles shot at your checkup? Exactly.
I just don’t bring it up or stay quiet while it’s discussed, then if I’m pressed on the issue I say I’m not opposed to receiving it but as a healthy 28 y/o with vaccinated parents who has already had COVID and is WFH I don’t have any particular urgency to get it either.
I have when my boss asked me during a 1 on 1 if I’d gotten it. In a group setting keeping quiet usually works.
