Having a hard time stomaching all the back pats for the Nike Kap and Serena work when we’re out here hyping the trump supporting KFC, privacy destroyers FB, and so many other bad actors. 🤢

If you really dig into it, Nike has its fair share of issues, too. Not many innocent corporations out there among the giants. At least, none that I can think of.

Adidas is its main competitor and far more ethically run when it involves manufacturing. But I agree. If we refused to advertise for all of the non-ethical brands, there would be a fraction of a fraction of the amount of agencies there are today. What we can do as advertisers is encourage ethical brands to aggressively and publicly wave that flag, make that flag look as appealing as possible to attract ethically minded people into the brand and put pressure on the the unethical brands to acquiesce out of fear of the effects on their bottom line.

I think you’re missing my point. We’re getting all these accolades for messaging we do for Nike like the Kap and Serena ads but, yeah, I’m saying it’s hard to stomach because off all these companies and their BS. Nike included. Serena’s women’s empowerment message same time as Nike’s massive executive firings due to sexual harassment and sexism is just one example. I’m just saying that I feel gross taking all these “oh wow, w+k, what an amazing place” comments but knowing we’re just like the rest of ‘em. No sympathy or argument needed. Just needed to say it somewhere.

WK is lauded because of their solid work. But don’t forget, It’s the businesses/clients that also drive the ethics. WK doesn’t control the entire perception of the business. Nike’s Mark Parker fires a bunch of people for having an all boys club. But he also is responsible for cultivating that culture. Adidas has their own problems with bringing in unethical manufacturers. Plus adidas is a bit scandalous with pay-for-play. All that to say businesses operate within their own solar system. Agencies are just a planet (sometimes considered like Pluto). What was a great reminder to me was to hear while at a portland sneaker networking conference a youngish Nike employee say to me, “Oh, you used to work at Wieden? Bobbito (keynote speaker) said that name a lot. What is that?” “The guy who wrote, ‘just do it.’ Uh he’s part of the agency that did, ‘Bo knows.’, ‘write the future.’, ‘dream crazy.’ ‘Never stop winning.’” It was met with a blank stare and a response, “oh cool, never heard of them till now.” So, all this to say, many companies are getting better. They are massive. Parts of the business don’t know what the other parts are doing. They aren’t great, but they are trying. Wk and many other agencies work for companies that are slowly getting woke. It’s super slow. All the money that the agency donates or matches contributions to is pretty amazing. And like all the others have said. Caldera is pretty special.

Yeah, I get what you’re saying. Just tired of the BS coming from every direction I guess. Thanks for the responses.

I get what you’re saying. It’s disheartening, and the same everywhere else. But look, its way worse over here.
