Having a panic attack, feel like this Russia thing is going to trigger a world economic melt down. And I heading to Bschool in Aug. So scared to be burning through all my saving just to have no job when I leave

I get it. But if it's not Russia, it's a pandemic, a bubble burst, or something or other. The world is not static my friend.

I wish I had an answer that could take your panic away. Sadly, anything can happen. The only way of knowing is to live it and know that even through the worst economic times in the modern era people made it through.

Try not to stress much about it. Stress about what you can control/impact and ride along with what is out of your control.

Going to bschool is probably the best thing in that situation. All your savings are toast anyway. At least with the MBA you’ll be able to find a job once the economy picks up again!

Yeah, you’re right. It’s a real tragedy to have thousands of people dead, world economies in turmoil, and your post-MBA job in jeopardy!

That’s probably why Putin’s invading. To ruin you.

How about having some perspective here?

Because none of those conflicts impact their b school recruiting. I just find it hilarious they’re worried more about employers cutting offers instead of being drafted during doomsday.

There’s no guarantees in this life. The sooner you accept that the happier you’ll be.

Spend some time away from the news feeds. To quote BSG - this has all happened before and it will happen again. Markets wobble and crash and they rebound. World powers flex and get aggressive. Do your bschool and live your life.

I met a startup founder in 2008 who said the post-Enron crash was the best thing that happened to his business because his costs went way down and Stanford grads started showing up for interviews. It all depends on where you want to stand.

People are so cruel in this post. I’m sorry OP - you’ll be okay. Live your life. You can’t plan for anything in the future

Yes, people claiming that you lack empathy lack empathy themselves, if this was 2008 again and everyone was in this boat, nobody would question you

A war might be the only thing that saves the US from economic meltdown. The Fed has been pumping the market at historic levels buying corporate bonds, currency swaps, and MBS to bolster liquidity. They need to taper before inflation runs away. It will be a painful bandaid to rip off.

likefunnysmart

Every war was result of economic conditions. WW2 made usa so rich and powerful that it changed course of history. Putin is attacking Ukraine to get hold of commodity rich country and secure his oil and gas ventures

All those laughing should listen carefully. If any nato troops are killed. Every nato country will descend upon Russia. That’s a new clear war peeps.

I agree. NATO won’t go after Russia either. The west is weak. We need leaders not social justice warriors.

Don’t worry. The draft will take you once you’re out of school.

If you can’t find a job, then you might as well start a business 😏

Seriously though, you’re worrying about something that 1.) is out of your control 2.) may not/will not happen.

like

Man! If that was your only worry. Freshman in high school during 9/11, graduated in the worse recession since the depression, finally start making progress and my career and hit with a pandemic, now trying to buy a house 😬.

Don’t worry… you’ll be fine.

Look at it this way, your savings will probably be inflated to worthless anyways by then, so you are still getting your value out of it.

You should enlist and get some perspective on life and then go to B school.

Worry can have benefits. Worrying about falling can keep you focused on a narrow trail, or drive you to set two alarms for your morning pitch to a critical client. But worry is not endured without cost….high blood pressure, muscular tension, psychological fatigue, strained relationships, etc.

Thought exercise with reasonable utility is:
1) can I directly influence this uncertain outcome? (If yes, worry)
2) (if no) can I indirectly influence this outcome?
3) (if no) don’t waste your health and energy

Easer said than done of course, but useful.
