Ah I’m in the same boat! Does your office have a nursing mothers room? I’ve asked to use that and didn’t get pushback (I think it is technically a “wellness room”).
Oh! We do have one of those, and I never thought of using it. It’s technically a wellness room for us as well, although mostly used for pumping. I could definitely use that and be back in my office in 20 minutes (especially because there’s only one woman using it right now). Thank you!
OP, i would suggest seeking medication for when you feel a headache coming on. My migraine medication imitrex works miracles, but I still need some time in a dark quiet space. You are no good to your partners if your mind is imploding
Imatrex is what I use! I have to watch how often I use it (doctor is adamant no more than 9x a month). Normally it’s no problem, but I have had bad months where I easily surpass that. I also do preventative measures, but there’s only so much you can control!
Had the same problem - BEST thing ever is Felix grey blue light glasses. Seriously haven't had an issue since I started wearing them. My migraines were often brought on from looking back and forth at screens and/or scrolling through a lot of text quickly etc. I also refuse to turn on the florescent lights in my office and purchased lamps instead.
Just make sure it's a high strength of protection (not sure tech term). I can actually feel the difference if I look at my computer without them for more than 15 minutes.
I did have a partner comment they always thought I was out because my office looks dark without the overheads lol
I usually just go sit in my car for 15 mins
I do this too! I even have a setup of sweaters and an eye mask for a back seat sessions while I’m warding off a headache.
Get checked out if you have a medical condition you have rights and your employer has to accommodate you. It could be chronic stress or anything but you should definitely do a CAT scan you just never know your health comes first.
Put a sign on your door? If everyone in the office knows it's a problem, they should be receptive to you telling them that you need a few minutes sometimes and a sign on the door is a signal that you're out of commission for a few minutes and that they should send you an email instead of visiting in person.
That’s my thought (other than liking the suggestion of the wellness room). Quite a few women pump in their offices and use a sign, which is effective. I didn’t want to announce it to everyone, but I’d rather do that than miss half a day working if I can’t kick the headache. Sucks to have to make it up later that evening after not feeling well.
Totally agree re losing the day and having to make it up. I actually tried using a sign and (shockingly) some partners thought / felt like that didn’t apply to them. At least where I work, there are always going to be people who think they are the most important thing in the world and their time matters more than yours. That’s why I’ve found it’s better to just remove myself and be unable for half hour or so.
How big is your group? If it’s not huge, all you need to do is casually drop to everyone you work with that this happens sometimes so when you ask them to come back in 15 mins they’ll understand. If you were a first year nobody would believe you, but since you’re senior enough I imagine nobody will bat an eye.
It’s a small group, and if they don’t know about my migraines specifically they at least know I’m “prone to headaches” (I have lamps in my office so it came up when people asked why the overhead is off). I probably should bring it up since, you’re right, I’ve built the level of trust by know and it’s not an everyday occurence.
(Cont.) the headache from becoming a migraine. I don’t need to “sleep”, just not look at/hear anything for 10-15 minutes. Our doors don’t lock. I don’t want to have to announce to everyone that I don’t feel well because it’s really not a big deal, but I feel obligated to answer the door when somebody knocks. Any tips?
I have the same issue and I’ve explained to the firm that this is an ongoing medical issue and occasionally I need to take some time or work from home to avoid bright environments. They’ve been totally understanding. I think it’s better to address that it’s an issue so you don’t have to worry about explaining every time you need to mitigate a mounting migraine. It’s the worst, and I’m sorry you also have this problem.
