Headed to M7 with 1) goal being to get into PM at a blue chip tech firm. Are my odds higher than 5%? Heard the horror stories but least have a ton of software / product cases under belt....

Yes, truth hurts but a great level set

OP, I’m a ex consultant (no CS background) and got multiple FAANG PM tech offers post MBB + BSchool. If you want tech-PM, the easier thing to do is move to AWS PMT post BSchool and then get poached by Azure or GCP in a few years. You can absolutely move to tech PM a couple of years after MBA/Consulting BUT you do need to move to McK Digital, BCG TA/DV etc and work on Analytics at Scale , Architecture redesign and Product build cases. Alternatively you can move to Amazon PM and then PMT internally if you don’t want to do core tech cases in consulting or move to MBB

From my experience recruiting for tech as an SAC there’s skepticism of consulting in general (our work isn’t particularly “user-focused”) so maybe a gap year to join a tech company in a data or bizops role would be good experience for post-MBA recruiting when speaking to “improving a product” or “increasing retention”

Google require their PMs to have both a CS degree and a business experience - this is pretty much non-negotiable. Amazon PM does not require CS. Amazon PMT want to see CS experience and will test technical skills (there is a coding exercise). These are the two ends of the spectrum for PM roles. MBA is going to help you get interviews, which obviously increases your chance of offer. But MBA skills itself is not going to help you.

No. He worked at ibm for like 5 years post JD mba. He went from UG straight to JD mba

Are you set on a blue chip company out of B-School? If not, maybe you can also try for smaller tech firms/startups and use the experience to lateral into a larger blue chip firm. (LEK consulting, m7 mba, & relevant PM would be hard to pass up for interviews) Another option is to try for other positions at a blue chip company and then lateral into the PM role as others have mentioned. Regardless, my recommendation is to read as many PM-related books as possible to get the “product mindset” (good ones include “cracking the PM interview”, “inspired”, & “the Lean Startup”)

Is this clearly outlined in the reqs posted on campus recruiting portals? Or more speaking from experience of who actually landed those interviews....

If you bring amazon to the mix your odds are higher. Fb/g are tough and there is a huge pool of amazing companies that will hire you. Grok system design though.
