I personally think it is difficult for headhunters to transition attorneys from one practice area to another because we are paid by the law firms in corporations that hire us to find specific types of people. If you're Recruiter seems to think s/he can do that, then go for it. I would strong suggest you query the recruiter on their relationship with this firm and why they think they're able to do that but if they are that's awesome! Sometimes we have personal relationships with our clients that enable us to help lawyers make that transition but it is truly based on our referral of the attorney.
I’m in the Baltimore/DC area, but more on the Maryland side of things.
That’s not an easy move
I was apprehensive at first, but headhunters can really help you lateral into a firm rather than you applying on your own. Consider working with multiple recruiters if you’re seriously looking to leave your current position. Some are better than others in term of connection and amplifying your resume.
I think you would be better served by an internal referral. You can just post here - anyone looking to refer me to x and someone will do it
