Right or privilege, it is in the best interest of a society seeking to be the most advanced to maintain a healthy populace. If you truly believe it is a privilege then you also have to accept those without healthcare insurance must be left to die, no emergency treatment. If we accept that it isn't a right but we still force facilities to provide emergency care then the system will not work. That it is law a facility must accept a person in need of emergency, life-saving treatment regardless of insurance coverage indicates we have accepted, in some form, healthcare is a right. Ultimately the refusal to provide healthcare will lead to epidemics eliminating swaths of low-wage workers leaving local industries void of low-wage workers. That's a problem. Unless you prefer to make your own bed at the hotel? Not to mention, the untreated communicable illnesses that could be left behind by low-wage employees who cannot afford coverage.

EY4, for those of us paying taxes, high quality healthcare without the baggage of pre-existing conditions etc. ought to be a right provided for by the government. In addition, the government also ought to secure basic level of healthcare for folks unemployed or too sick/old to work. A lot of stuff in life is driven by luck and circumstance so let's not equate healthcare access with cable TV. If capitalist countries in Western Europe can make it happen without bankrupting the state, no reason why the US can't do so. This requires better fiscal management and a painful yet necessary systemic overhaul.

Right. Everyone deserves the right to live a healthy life.

like

The fact that y'all are so greedy and are so against helping others who are less unfortunate than us is disgusting

like

Do you have a right to national security or other public services or infrastructure such as highways? Should only people with money be entitled to those services? The point is that regardless of your political or philosophical beliefs, the economic realities are such that sometimes you end up paying for other people and other times people are paying for you in order to get a service to a manageable scale. Replacing a suboptimal system with a crap solution is not the way to fix it.

Inalienable rights: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Kinda hard to have the first and third without access to affordable healthcare.

like

It's a right in every civilized country except ours. We have a responsibility to take care of our neighbors. It's a right. Food, clothing, shelter and healthcare.

like

^disagree. The only thing you are entitled to in life: death and paying taxes

like

Only if you pay for it

like

It cannot be a right if it requires taking from other to fulfill. An actual right is something that is inherent in our humanity (speech, pursuit of happiness, assemble, etc.) Food, health care, TV, condoms, etc. can only be acquired from others voluntarily or by taking.

Privilege

like

Not a right for filthy rich management consultants. But no state should ever knowingly let its citizens die.

like

Healthcare in a free society is not a function of government. The government needs to get out of the healthcare business and allow the free market to flourish. Healthcare is not a right. Rights are inherently intangible, and healthcare is a commodity. When the the government starts declaring commodities to be a "human right" they assume redistribution powers that are not afforded to them by the constitution.

like

It's definitely a privilege. Healthcare is not an inalienable right. HOWEVER, it's a shame that in access to healthcare is so hard in our country. Especially considering we consider ourselves the most industrialized and developed nation in the world. That doesnt mean it should be a right though. It means that we need to work on making healthcare more affordable because it directly benefits our society as a whole. And please spare me the theatrics of calling people who disagree with you on this careless pieces of shit who don't care about others.

like

Having ability to pay dictate access to healthcare is fundamentally wrong on so many levels. Results in higher overall healthcare costs, worse care, less focus on important preventive care, and is really just morally reprehensible

like

Europe is eyeballs in debt. Stop with that example pls

Stupid question. Clean water. Safe foods. Religious freedom. Social mobility. Heat in winter. All privileges that should be required at a basic level to all citizens of a developed and prosperous country.

like

Fortunate^ oops! Lol

like

Everyone who thinks it's a privilege would change their mind the second a loved one dies bc they didn't have access to healthcare and the treatments that could have saved their life

like

Most rights seem to be something that others can take away. They exist beforehand. So I have free speech until others around intercede Thinking of healthcare as a right is interesting because it requires the resources of others.

like

The only rights that you are entitled to are negative rights where others don't impede your liberty. Nobody has to do anything to grant you free speech. For you to have a "right" to Healthcare it requires you to force someone to provide you with services no matter what. If you want to discuss the government being involved from a financial perspective or to fix the fact it doesn't quite behave like a market then we can. But any talk about rights is selfish.

Just switched jobs. Old 401k has more than $5k and new 401k is with a different provider. Is there any reason whatsoever to move the old 401k cash anywhere, either to the new 401k or to an IRA? Given that it's more than $5k, it can stay there indefinitely, right? I'm fine with the investment options with my old 401k. And I can transfer it over to a new IRA or new 401k anytime, even years in the future, right? Given that no distribution will come to force the 60 day rule?

I spent the last 3 months "growing up" & now I'm ready to go. 1st thing is for me to get my own place. I'd like to buy instead of rent because I don't want to pay someone else's mortgage. I'm thinking of selling my car & cash out some of my 401k to buy a house. My thought is to put down 3.5% for a FHA loan then make a big payment towards the principal to reduce long-term interest. Anything wrong with this thinking or anything else I should consider?
