Healthy dog breeds. First time dog parent and would love to adopt a healthy fit. Thoughts?

Adopt a mut. They’re the healthiest since they don’t have a long line of inbreeding.

For extremely small, I was referring to those 5 pounds or less as an adult. I have friends who get the teacup yorkies who fit in my small hands as a fully grown dog.

Adopt a shelter dog. Mixes are generally healthier and live longer. I have a german Shepard mix and she is just about to turn 6 and I have had zero medical issues with her (besides allergies but that’s typical for north Texas.) Agree with M1 though. You should find a dog that matches your life style.

Im partial to rescue dogs and muts. The pure bred dogs I grew up with had significant issues but I know several people who’ve had zero issues. But it might be more useful to look for characteristics that fit into your life rather than a “healthy” dog breed. For example, are you an by active person who wants to run with the dog daily or more of a cuddly, relax on the couch type? How much space do you have for them? How will they get along with your (future) kids?

Can’t get healthier than a mutt 😎

Dogs are always going to have health issues tbh. You can argue that purebreds have more because they’re inbred or that rescues have more because they possibly were homeless. That said, frenchies are notoriously unhealthy

like

And English bulldogs. Lots of skin issues. Really any dog with lots of folds. Most rescue dogs are mixed.

Also worth mentioning if you want a certain breed, there are still rescue options out there. We have a husky from the shelter, and someone I know runs a golden rescue. I’ve always had rescues, and all have had great health. Definitely find a dog that fits your lifestyle. Lots of huskies turn up in shelters because a lot of people get the “pretty” breed without realizing how much work they are. Our husky had been returned to she shelter TWICE—he’s a good dog, just intelligent and energetic, which requires a lot of commitment in training.

like

Heck yeah. The city shelter I volunteered at had so many GSDs and Huskies. It was so sad. All so completely untrained but they were good at pairing them with people with experience.

like

my first dog, a mixed breed from a shelter, lived to almost 17. you rarely see that with purebreads. in general, the smaller the dog the healthier they are. and avoid the snub nosed dogs.

like

Adopt mixed breeds, but get one that are medium/large sized working dogs. Small ones wouldn’t be good on hikes, and really large ones tend to be on the lazier side. Shepherds and herders are great for active families and they are very smart. You just need to keep them busy and occupied

Any dog can be healthy or unhealthy. From what I have seen... My sister has a german shepperd who had stomach issues since he was a baby and both his parent had pedigree and whatnot. My parents have a mutt and she had an issue with her hip which required surgery.. so... Pick one with characteristics you like instead. Long hair or short hair, small or big, etc. Pugs and frenchies ... Their breathing makes me feel anxious though

like

Adopt a mutt, 💯. Can’t get healthier than that. A good rule of thumb is the more unique-looking a dog breed is, the more health problems they have.

like

If you can find a mix that include Labrador, blue heeler sheep dog, or any mid sized herding dog (40-65 pounds), they tend to have great temperament, good hips and joints, and pretty good genetic health. I own a pure bred chocolate lab and LOVE him, but grew up with two mid-sized mutts who were basically bulletproof for 13 years and a joy to be around as well.

like

Completely agree with everyone here recommending adopting a mutt. One other thing to consider that I haven't seen mentioned here is pet insurance. I didn't have it for my older dog (who luckily got through rectal cancer without any apparent long-term concerns -- and without exorbitant vet bills). But many of my friends swear by it, and I'm considering it for the younger dog I recently adopted. Just something to look into and decide whether it makes sense for you.

like

Rescue dogs/ mixes are generally healthy especially if they weren’t pulled from a puppy mill. Beyond that, a healthy dog will be the one who’s best fit for your lifestyle - a high energy dog living in a small space with insufficient physical and mental stimulation will not be living it’s best and healthiest life

like

If you don’t want a mutt, go to the bottom of the AKC popularity list. Those dogs tend to have fewer health problems because they aren’t as popular and hence aren’t bred or inbred by inexperienced breeders or puppy mills. They’re not “bad” or”ugly” dogs; they’re just not that well-known.

My shih tzu that I had going up is going on 16 and perfectly healthy
