That is absolutely horrific and the hypocrisy of the timing makes that even worse. I’m so sorry that happened, that’s awful.
DE&I education efforts work for some but more of the “I didn’t realize when I said X that was insensitive and I should’ve said Y” crowd. Calling people sandn*goers is an obvious slur that your manager is well aware of causing harm and there’s no amount of training that will change that attitude as that person is straight up racist.
Have you reported this to HR? If you choose not to then I suggest you start documenting. Someone who says that in the office environment is bound to say other things. Capture everything in detail in a document - what was said, when, where, who witnessed it and who it was said to - and then if you feel more comfortable going to HR you’ll have a detailed track record for the discussion.
Given that it’s your manager God only knows how that attitude is influencing how he is making decisions that impact your career - raises, promotions, how he talks about you to his superiors, etc.
This.
The person saying this needs to go. Period.
Software Engineer, you mentioned that you are keeping notes on your computer. I strongly suggest that you keep notes in your personal Google workspace.
This is going to sound stupid… but it has happened. Your work stored on your work computer is the organization’s property.
Your personal notes on personal property… your phone, google workspace…. are owned by you.
WTF that is messed up. I know bigotry is everywhere but I’m sorry you experienced it directed at you at your place of work. It doesn’t sound like any amount of talk of inclusion and diversity is gonna resolve this person’s behavior 😬 ayayay!
100% with you on this. Many people left the company because of this kind of behavior. Even though, some people tried to alert on this, top management never took any measure.
As an Arab male myself, I wouldn’t let this go. I would escalate this and let him/her know about this and inform the partner in your practice.
As a Middle Eastern dude myself, I have to LOL. All this forced diversity crap is stupid and phony anyway.
100% agree
I'm sorry you have been put in this situation. I will never understand why this behavior is tolerated by companies. If I was the leader and was shown documented instances, that manager would be gone so fast his head would spin. There is NO EXCUSE for using racist slurs.
Nothing short of naming and shaming such organizations and the specific people will change such behavior.
Please tell HR. Even though it appears nothing was done before, you don't know that for sure. This manager could be on their last and final warning and this complaint could be what HR needs to finally get rid of this person. Employee turnover costs companies a lot of money so they should be interested in eliminating the source. On the other hand, if you are correct and truly nothing is done, there is always Glassdoor to write reviews. Or dropping a line to the EEOC.
That’s not ok. Report them to HR!
Have you documented this? I would go to HR immediately. If nothing has been done by the company. I would prepare to find a new place of employment, because you’re not going to find support there.
I’d stage a walk out , start a union. And have their dismissal as part of the demands.
I’m very white passing so hearing these types of comments about Arabs or Muslims are so common for me. Their faces when they find out I’m ethnically North African are priceless, and they never expect me to do anything Bc I’m a girl. I️ filed a lawsuit against an old company I worked for for this, I️ think that taught them a lesson, I️ hope you do the same.
People are mean, but you have to remember - only a few of them are this mean. There is really nothing you can do and all diversity training won’t change their mind. In various countries I have been judged for being too white or being too dark - go figure! Try this not affect you and remember good people will never say things like these. So, stay away from bullies/meanies and surround yourself with good humans.
this is awful! go ahead and start looking for a new company. document and send to HR and let them know it is an EEOC issue as these attitudes are affecting your job and creating a hostile workplace based on race. I guess the only "good" thing is that you know what you are up against. It's almost worse when they have these attitudes behind your back because you would wonder why you are treated unfairly. Now that you know, it's time to get moving.
Most of the people who speak about inclusiveness are the most racist. Doesn't shock me.
Performative inclusiveness is not exclusive to Twitter my friends.
You can complain to HR, but you might be risking your job if you go it alone. Talk to your fellow coworkers and see if they’d be willing to join you in going to HR. What this manager said is a fire-able offense, and if your HR Director doesn’t think so, maybe your local television station would be interested. Tell management that you’re willing to go public if they don’t fire this scumbag, and see if they blow you off then.
Sounds like some MAGA tra$h
I have never heard that term before, and hope I never hear it again. I am not sure what level you are, but if you feel brave, you should call the person out on it (one on one) and say its not appropriate to use that term and its not in line with your firms values. You could also try and find an ally - so are there are senior people at your firm you could approach. You should definitely report to your whistle-blower hotline if you get nowhere with HR. It's not the right answer but if this person has any influence over your career or promotion, look to move teams or firms.
Not shocked
We all know people have this type of attitude and power and keep it hidden, but for them to feel comfortable saying it aloud to someone else means that you should tell HR and find a new employer.
