I came in at SA, 17 years exp, promoted same year. Now after 4 years up for Director... very much on track!
I welcomed the opportunity to figure out the firm for 9 months before promotion. It has made a difference.
It’s not an insult— $150k+ is a fabulous salary for SA/M and the bonus is great. It’s easy to get a fantastic bonus and run circles around your SA counterparts who are decades more junior.
Take the money, the bonus, the lowered expectations and run!
Kind of true. I know a guy with 18 yrs of experience been given SA role due to the same reason.
Wish he gets a better offer and leave soon - I’m sure he isn’t out there coz he loves ‘Consulting’. I wouldn’t be able to honestly answer this question - why consulting - because I’m looking
I worked with a retired Lt. Colonel that lead a unit in Cyber Command and they gave him SA at PwC, I personally thought that was insulting that the firm would think so little of his experience and ability to lead others
Sad 😔 for him . Unless the offer is monetarily so that you can’t refuse - there shouldn’t be a reason to downgrade the career hierarchy level to SA after having rich yoe under the belt
Depends what you are doing with the yoe. I’ve seen folks with 30+ yoe and we offered them at mgr, yet fail to perform in consulting. And there are some who are just good at it with less yoe
I’m not even a consultant (IFS, SM) and I’m skeptical of bringing people in at Manager from Industry. Not because they aren’t capable of meeting the Professional Framework requirements for the level, but because SO MANY companies don’t require what PwC does of a Manager. SA gives them a chance to learn the Firm (a skillset all on its own!) and to see the expectations of Managers on up. In IFS you can be promoted one year in - I know that’s rare on the consulting LoS side. And if you’re a baller leader, you can absolutely show it year over year and realistically target promotion to SM. You have to HAVE IT, of course, but it’s a possibility.
The one person I brought onto my team at Manager (I was targeting SA...) absolutely did not have the skills or professional maturity that we expect from an M. And this person came from another consulting firm (not Big4).
You just can’t know EXACTLY what you’re getting, even with great interview skills. Leaning towards SA is a buffer for that, IMO.
Sounds like your experience is very different form my own.
