I truly appreciate my union. I used to think they were pushy and forceful. But over time I began to see the extra, non voluntary, non compensation duties they were fighting against and I realized that it was good to have an advocating body. Unions can be problematic, but if you work in a system that grinds down teachers and students alike, it’s nice to have advocates to push back. Our students have their parents and us. Teachers need someone to stick up for their interests and their health in this case. I wish it were different, but this is the system we have. If you’re lucky enough to live and work in a place where people are reasonable and the community is willing to put their money where their mouth is, that’s awesome.

I agree!!! Well said. Unions, for the most part, are beneficial.

I am a proud member of a union - NJEA. I have a solid union who will (and has) have my back. I am (relative to teachers w/o a union) fairly compensated. I have protections which I welcome and appreciate, and yes my union has opinions about everything. Dept of Ed Secty says “schools MUST open”. NEA President reminds her she forgot SAFELY. You may agree, you may not agree, that’s your choice. I personally support most of the efforts my union makes of behalf of it’s members, communities, and my children (some of whom) attend public schools. I don’t care what you choose to believe, but we should all realize that we are living in turbulent and dangerous times. I choose to belong and believe that my union has my interests at heart because I have already determined that Betsy DeVos doesn’t. Pretty much a no brainer.

My union gives me valuable information about how candidates for public office support public schools and educators. I never fell pressured to back a particular candidate by the union. I’m grateful for the information so that I may vote for someone who supports public schools.

I am a member of NEA as our school members negotiate for all staff and I don’t feel it is fair that I get the benefits of that without being part of the piece that pays for it. It is a personal choice. That said, I do not agree with about any of the politics and stands of NEA. I do let them know this when asked. 🤷‍♀️ again, personal choice. 🇺🇸

My district has options too but I choose to be part of the solution and help problem solve but I have never been pressured to do anything political. I have been asked to volunteer to hold a sign for a bond that we were trying to get passed but I was never looked down on if I chose not to participate. If I was pressured like some districts I might feel like you do.

I work in a district where it is a personal choice to join the union. It is not required. However, at times like these I truly believe that unions are more beneficial than a hindrance. I am glad as hell that I am part of the union right now. I am interested to know, from teachers who are working in districts with no union, what is your district doing to protect teachers students and staff?

I’m the one whose ex won’t pay for college - and I have an update. My ex texted me today that he and his wife are buying our son a car (!!) for Christmas. On the one hand, it’s one less expense for me. On the other hand, my ex won’t pay for college and he owes me at least $10K for previous medical expenses, but he can find money for a car - which is a “fun” expense that will get him brownie points with our son. Whatever - my son benefits, but talk about a “Disneyland Dad.” Ugh.

I’m not much of a conspiracy theorist, but am I the only person who thinks the mass publication of the Omicron variant by the media was due to traditionally low viewership during the holidays? It seems like the Media wants to dictate COVID’s trajectory & demise to align with their business strategy. As overall viewership falls in a post-Trump era and waning COVID numbers, big media has to be a little nervous about audience retention.

Ladies, I had a breakthrough with my boyfriend and I am so proud. I have encouraged him to go to therapy for years. He grew up with a father who is emotionally abusive. He felt like he didn’t need to go because he could just “handle it” (part of the toxic culture he was raised in) so I stopped pushing. Yesterday he told me he was going to therapy to try it out, I said okay, and made him a coffee to go. He came home, hugged me, cried, and read me a list of things he was working on. 🥺💛
