It's an option. I came into consulting as a DE as well and the experience has been interesting.
My first project had nothing to do with DE and was more of a traditional engagement - it was a pain having to switch to making slide decks and having to go back to excel after working in python and sql for several years. Second project was a perfect match and I enjoyed it but quickly learned that its much harder to gain any kind of traction in the technical roles. The client could love you and keep extending your contract for years on end, but leadership will always just treat you like an after thought.
Looking to make the jump back to industry again or maybe a boutique where analytics/engineering is more front and center. Love the work itself but need to find a place where you find the support you need to keep moving forward.
You explained perfectly the reason why I would like to move to a less technical role. Also, my humble opinion is that technical knowledge has the potential of accelerating a lot of tasks in management. At least from what I've seen, a lot could be improved with a version control system, maybe some small scripts, etc
