Hello all, I got an offer from a well funded startup by a serial Entrepreneur. There isn’t any information on this startup for how much RSUs I should be getting but it seems really low for my experience ($100,000 over 5y, and 6 total YOE). Any general advice or rule of thumbs I should know?

What series funding? What’s the role? What is the base pay?

The RSUs aren’t terrible then. 5 years is a little long but that’s still an early company. Do you know if they offer annual grants after the initial stock award?

By two rounds, do you mean Series A or B? And what’s the rest of the current offer (base and bonus)?

I believe series A. They offered me 70k BP and 100k RSU over 5 year. They undercut my salary by a lot. Going to go back to them with 130k, but trying yo gauge how much RSU I should ask for.

The Rsus will probably work out to 60 or 80 a year if your lucky and they b/c ipo. In general it's low though for the market and this serial entrepreneur doesn't seem to interested in bringing employees along for the ride

5 years sound longer than average. Most offers now are 3-4 years fully vested. Amazon offers 2 years but comes at a steep personal life price.

That sounds weird.

RSUs sounds like they have stock that can be sold. Which would be a public company and not a startup. They may also give RSUs if they are in the process of going public.

Are you sure they are not options?
If they are options then most companies target a share price > $20. So if shares are currently $5 you could be looking at 3x (which is sale - strike). It could also be a big fat zero.

To me for a startup RSUs sounds like all the same risk but very little upside.

Ask yourself : do I love it so much I only want to be paid 70k?

It’s a Stock Award.

I have never seen 5 year vesting in all the jobs I have had or all offers I have had. That's my first red flag.

I have never seen RSUs unless IPO horizon < 1yr. That's my second red flag.

But, it's about the number of shares you would get for those $100k. It's still funny paper money until IPO / post lock-up. Usually companies target share price > $20 at exit.

I'm not saying it's not going to work out, just that you should be okay with only the base pay.

Hello,
I’m a junior data scientist and in my current job I mostly code using Pyspark (no machine learning) so I would like to work on a side project that could leverage my profile and data science/ML skills. What project would you advice me to work on ? (it can be a kaggle project, or a classic task that you do at your job, or a paper that you read).
I’m overwhelmed by the many suggestions online and would prefer to get a suggestion directly from professionals.
PS : I’m not a beginner.

I studied computer science in school but I didn’t do well due to life coming in the way. I got poor grades but ultimately finished my degree without any internship experience.

After three months of job search, I started for 45K at a construction company as a Jr App Support. After a year I shifted in to QA for 65k and now after a year of QA, I have finally gotten a position as a software engineer for 78K base.

The imposter syndrome is finally gone!

Hang in there, hard work pays off.

I have 2 offers to consider. What makes more sense?
Full time role with 3 weeks vacation and benefits or contract opportunity with 20k more in potential salary.

Little background, I have been a loyal employee and have only worked at 1 firm for about 6 years now. Looking for more growth and obviously money.

Need some suggestions on what to consider and any pitfalls that I should be aware of.

Thanks

What are your thoughts about having to take an iq/personality assessment tests? It seems so outdated to me. I don’t think it predicts how you will truly perform at a job. I took a test like this for a startup once and they were concerned about my ability to speak up or behave in social settings. This was completely false. I present, interview clients, demo products, and facilitate meetings for a living. So what if I go home and shut down after work? I’m exhausted from speaking all day!
