As an ex-auditor, audit will not lead you down a path towards banking, especially internal audit. Internal audit especially, the skills are not particularly transferable.
While audit is a potential path to investment banking, the path would typically look like this: public accounting > financial due diligence > middle market IB. this is a long path and not guaranteed. Note that public accounting is very different than internal audit
If you truly want to end up in banking your best bet is focusing on GMAT and getting into a good MBA program
Thanks for your input, i dont think i should stay in my current role and as of now that Wells job is my best option. Maybe i work that, while getting my part time MBA then make a move in like 2 years. Where were you an internal auditor?
Yes it will help, it will give you the ability to learn different parts of the business and open you up to new experiences. Not sure where all these other comments are coming from but the bank is losing people left and right so lots of opportunity. Also don't go into debt getting an MBA, have plenty of friends that did this and ended up with zero to no job progression. Get your experience and go from there.
