Hello All! My role is very niche and I’m hoping to find someone with a similar role/title or knows someone that had a job similar to mine. I’m the operations administrator of a freestanding ER in Houston, TX. I am the sole form of consistent management on site and I oversee about 50 employees. I oversee multiple departments, including registration, nursing, imaging and ER techs. I am not a nurse, I have zero clinical background. I make $75K. Thoughts? What do you feel is a fair salary?

I’m an RN unit manager and manage around 65 FTEs. I make $102k currently (this is somewhat behind market locally I feel like). I would say that is the minimum for you. The salary doesn’t come from clinical experience but the fact that you are managing those employees and the location.

Central Arkansas. We are typically lower paid in healthcare arena compared to Texas metros.

75k for the role is low but I’d like to know where you are located before I say get out of dodge

I’m as well perplexed and intrigued how u oversee so much departments with 0 clinical/healthcare background. Definitely agree, your underpaid for that much responsibility.

like

In the military/VA System they’ll have non clinical persons overseeing called ODA (On Duty Administrator). That being said, OP you’re getting majority shafted with 75k in Houston.

I am a behavioral health care executive and CEO. I oversee Director of nursing along with my other direct report managers. It’s not that unheard of for a nurse to report up to someone who is not a nurse. And you are getting majorly shafted. You should be making at least 100,000 in taxes for what you’re doing.

like

Thank you for that feedback!

This is intriguing having nurses report to you not as a nurse, never heard of this before and if you were a RN I would 100% feel like this responsibility and oversight is being undercompensated. Who handles performance management for the nurses on clinical opportunities, quality measures and license specific items?

It does sound like a great role with so much to learn and grow, just very perplexed by the nursing bit.

like

You’re right! It’s very unique! I have a Nurse Manager under me who does scheduling, ordering meds/supplies, EOC, etc. I handle the hiring of all staff with the help of my Leads In each department. I also do all licensing, ensure all quality measures are completed, all staff counseling, all business development, all marketing for the facility, maintain community relationships and attend all chamber events. I do A LOT. But because I am not clinical I rely on my department leads quite a bit.

I would like you to give me some insight. I am not a nurse but I have over 12years of clinical experience in addition to having my bachelor's in Healthcare Administration. I am currently in school for my MHA. Idk if it's because I am in Louisiana or what?! Please advise!

Try addiction treatment centers or nursing homes. We’re always hiring in my field.

Similar roll up number about $90k. Also feel like I’m very underpaid when compared to other systems. But I am learning a ton too. So I hope it’s a stepping stone to an appropriate amount.

I’d love a position like that. Pay seems pretty reasonable!

I just left an ambulatory position (internal medicine) where I had 32 FTEs reporting to me, 12 clinicians MDs & APRNs, 2RNs then the rest were support staff … not as large as you. I also have no clinical experience but do have a masters in healthcare Administration. My pay was $84k

So much is market specific. I also think there’s a tendency to pay less coming up via primary versus specialty care. I know some of the first time managers were making somewhere in the 90k range early on. My first specialty manager position I came in at 107k. I did have a nurse supervisor, but had to get by without a frontline supervisor and had to rely heavily on my lead scheduler.

At least $150k

To the OP, that seems exceptionally low. Especially in Houston.

To the nurses bringing up the “nurses work for nurses”: in any healthcare system as you work your way up the org chart, you will eventually not have a nurse. Otherwise every hospital CEO would have to be an RN and we all know that is not the case.

It’s a non-revenue generating role for the practice administration is part of high cost of overhead. That salary seems really high for Texas I would think about $55,000 - $65,000 would be fair since it’s a low cost of living state.

Have any of you worked two full time positions at once before or known someone who has, during the pandemic? I’m contemplating doing so.

Background:
I have worked at company A for 7 months now and they require I come in once a week.
I also just accepted a fully remote position at company B and was going to put my two weeks in to company A when my background check for company B was nearing a close but now I kind of just want to keep both
They’re both finance positions with 2 YOE.

Suggestions?

Disappointed with the 2.42% raise in Austin market. I joined the company in June 2021. My manager resigned in October 2021, new manager got assigned this February 2022. There were no self evaluation sent last year. The numbers were already decided by my manager’s boss and the HR and my manager was just a communicator. When asked, got a response that business is affected due to shipment/container price hikes, chip shortage, Covid, war, inflation, etc.
