Can you rent one of those steam cleaners from like Walmart or Rent a Vac or whatever place like that?
Don't know if it will be cost effective for your $200 rug though. But I know it worked really well on a condo rental carpet!
Otherwise, I would just vacuum, then use one of those carpet cleaner sprays (let sit, then vacuum again). Do all this a few days before you move.
Home Depot rents out the steam cleaners too. I looked into it once and I think it was like $30-50
I’d pay the $200 and be done with it if you really like the rug. Depending on the material, if you don’t let it dry properly you could misshape it. Or, donate it and invest in a high quality rug for your new place
I believe I might have to clean the rug frequently because it is in the living room where there is a lot of traffic and also it’s beige colored. So I feel it shows if its dirty
I'm throwing my rug out when I move. Unless it's some cool design or something sentimental you can get a new rug for way less than that at ikea
Yeah I agree every year would be a bit much, I've had mine for 3 years and I don't even want to know how gross it is
We use the Hoover Carpet Cleaner which is on Amazon for about $90. Super effective and doesn’t need a lot of effort.
You could buy a “little green machine” for $100 and DIY! They sell them on amazon
Thanks EY1, looking right away!
I’ve rented carpet cleaner machines for mine because I just don’t have the storage space to purchase and keep one. You can find rental locations near you with these links:

If zerorez is in your area they’re cheaper than most but do a great job.
Depending on size; but I clean my wool area rugs at the dry cleaner for $30-$50 a piece.
