Also recommend a travel agent for groups, they'll plan it all and collect payments so that it's not on one person and sometimes depending on the group size can get group discounts.

My best friend took a year off work and just traveled around South America with just a backpack and duffle bag of essentials. He spent about $5 to $10 a night at local hostels and food costs cheaper at local restaurants and shops. He spent roughly $500 a month on room and board.
