I'm a SQL developer for our finance department. The fact that you are knowledgeable in Finance that can code and understand RDBMS makes you a unique and sought after employee. We have Finance Solutions Architects, Business Systems Analyst, ERP systems administrators, and software engineers working together to make our finance engine run. So there are opportunities out there should you decide to pursue them.
Oh, and I got into SQL working for Kaiser Permanente as an account rep. Their finance processes were manual and inefficient with multiple ways for an account rep to make mistakes. And these mistakes could be costly(including having too many would cost you your job). So why not automate it so that the account rep isn't sweating whether they put the right value in the box?
OOO is a big field, so I would say first commit to one language to learn it properly.
Developing libraries and software can be lonely and hard at times, are you sure this is something for you ?
Other than that, I would say go for it ! Download some open source GitHub project and read throughout the code base while trying to understand the code, debugging at times or even adding your own features/classes. It helped me tremendously in my own learning.
