Hello everyone, current 3L student here. I’m doing a project for my Legal Ops course relating particularly to in-house work. My specific focus and question is “how does technical competence relate to in-house counsel.” If anyone can give their opinion as to that question and if possible provide the sector you work in, it would be greatly appreciated. I’m trying to make a blurb section of attorney’s opinions regarding that question. I respect all of your time and consideration, thank you.

Sounds like the nice way of saying “don’t be the idiot that can’t use excel but wants to represent Microsoft.” A lot of the job of being in-house counsel is being able to relate to and win the confidence of your business teams, which involves knowing the technical aspects of your business. You want to be the person they want to call with a problem, not the person they regard as short-visioned or worse, uninformed.

like

Do you mean legal tech or in your (in house) industry?

Legal tech/operations as a whole (in the most general sense - any industry).

I think this question is probably getting at the model professional role directing attorneys to keep up on technology I'm not sure where the exact rule citation is but look it up

OP I think what this poster meant is that attorneys have an obligation to keep up with technology through the model rules. So how review it is an interesting data point but the fact remains that even if people are incompetence they are breaking the model ethical rules. Being confident with your technology is so important as an attorney that we have decided as a society that it is unethical to practice if you cannot keep up with the tech.

Define technical competence.

Thank you everyone for your comments.

That was enough to complete a project?

Project was completed already, I just wanted to do an outside the box blurb slide with a comment or two of someone from the industry.

My company historically paid base comp and bonus based on years out of law school. Level 1 is 1-9, and Level 2 is 10+. Diff if $50k+, easily. My team’s work isn’t distributed any differently based on seniority, and we’re all doing the same subject matter. We have a new GC changing it so bonus can be higher (but not lower) if you take on more work.

Do you think this is a fair system? Is it right to push for equal comp, especially given that there’s a new reward system for doing more work?

I’m currently at a medium sized tech startup. I was interviewing for a role that would be a bump in pay and title at a multinational public F50 company. At first, the hiring manager and head of legal were very complementary about my experience. Almost too much so. After a week of interviews with the team (softball-esq), I was informed that if I wanted to join, they would bring me on at a lower title. I’m not sure about comp yet. But if comp is still an increase + experience at a public..

I’ve been in an in-house role since the beginning of the year and just gave 2 weeks’ notice to leave for a much better paying and better titled position. The response has been very petty, to the point that I’ve been called unprofessional even after I asked the hiring attorney whether I could give longer notice at the current company’s request. Is this normal?
