Hello everyone! I am currently in school to obtain my Bachelor of Sociology degree. I would like to gain experience in Human Resources department. How would I go about doing so when most companies want experience workers?

What area of HR are you most interested in? Generally speaking I would suggest looking for HR admin positions, companies will often hire recent grads for those roles. If you are interesting in Talent Acquisition you could look at onboarding specialist positions, that’s a common role for new grads as well.

Are you looking to gain experience while in school?

I'd recommend the student PHR certification or finding a local student SHRM chapter to connect you with internship opportunities!

Any thoughts on the best certifications to get in order to help move forward? I have considered the CCP from World at Work, but it’s fairly pricey to get by the time you wrap up everything. I was looking at both SHRM-CP and SPHR. Everyone that I have spoken to has the SHRM, but that’s also only looking at individuals in a small geographic footprint and within 3-4 different companies. I experienced an agency I am a contractor with that informed me I was not eligible for medical insurance until after 30 days but actually I was eligible for since day 1. I had a colleague hired from that agency as well as a contractor who told her the same thing and so I informed her otherwise. She fought tooth and nail for them to coincides she at least was ablevto get hers.

Hello! I am an HR Coordinator at a nonprofit in Michigan! We are a growing company and I want to suggest to my boss and other higher ups within the company we create a employee morale committee. How would one go about creating a case for that? Like in my mind a group of people from the company would get together a few times a month and create fun things for our employees. Is anyone familiar with non-profit HR? I sit on a non-profit board and lend my HR expertise to them. Our executive director is leaving and other board members want to pay a “leaving bonus” as a thank you for her hard work and say it’s common in non-profit realm. I have researched and see a lot of retention bonuses but unsure why we’d give someone a bonus on their way out and don’t want to set a precedent for doing this. Any insight is appreciated.

So I’ve always had a rough time trying to find what role titles I would be a good fit to apply to given that my career growth has been so peculiar (HR assistant at hotel, Operations Manager at hotel, seller support at Amazon, customer experience coordinator at an IT company, talent acquisition specialist at a health org)
In those roles I normally took more in my plate than the typical role requires (hr functions, data analysis, etc)

I’m regularly told that they’re exceeding expectations but then they get reviews that say they’re meeting expectations on a team full of people that do way less than they do? After spending 4 years as a mid-level ops manager, I tried to break into HR through talent acquisition. Now after 6 years in TA, I've had a hard time getting out of it. My goal was always to get into a more broad HRBP position, but I've since worked for smaller orgs without a solid HR career path. When I ask about my career goals, they keep telling me, "Soon!" Or "Maybe in 6 months!"

I'm testing SPHR in June. Any advice for securing the type of role I'm aiming for?

I have been working in HR for 1 year now, specifically in recruiting. I am currently an in-house recruiter for a company. There is a large turnover for the position I hire for, the candidates are low quality as the position I hire for does not call for many specific skills or hard-to-obtain skills.
What sort of requirements typically need to be met to move into a different part of HR? I will likely have to find another company as the only positions above me in my company are taken by people who are very unlikely to leave in the coming 4-5 years.
