My friend lived in NY and she said her 200 square foot apartment was nearly $2,000 a month. I think she was right in the heart of NYC. But from what I hear it is VERY expensive to live there.
A one-bedroom in the most trendy and desirable neighborhoods will likely cost you between four and 5000 per month. In reality you will have to settle for a less-trendy neighborhood and get some roommates

As a rule of thumb, most apartments require you to be able to cover 40x your monthly rent--that is to say that if your monthly rent is $3,500 (average pre-covid rent for a true 1BR), your tc should be at least 140k (some require 35x, others up to 50x).
