Is submitting job references obsolete?

I didn’t get asked one for my current role and it’s looking like I won’t for the one I’m interviewing for now.

To be fair, all anyone ever does is pick people they know will say really good things anyway. So maybe removing them just saves everyone time.

I’ve always had a full time job (10 years) and I recently took a job as a contractor/consultant for a bank. It’s a 40 hour week hourly job. Is this considered freelance? I read the other posts and I see people are double dipping taking on multiple contracts, is there other work out there that I can layer onto this job in the off hours? I figured all gigs would be 9-5. Is the reason people do contract work for the $$$ I’m making $75 an hour and not sure what my role would pay if I was FT.

Stay in current job with a team I like, at a big name employer, but doing work that is not building marketable skills, or jump ship now? My work will improve in a year’s time during which we will be upgrading our systems. I just don’t know if I should stick around for a year helping implement IT projects when I’m really an investment analyst and supposed to be coming up with trade ideas/models and following markets.

Need words of wisdom and encouragement to stay calm. Rationally I know I need to stay still for a couple of months (3-4 months), but emotionally I am not entirely happy. I am impatient; I have a goal and I want to hit it. I am competitive; I have friends who are ahead of me financially and I want to catch up. But right now I am not able to make moves. During switching, is the ctc given based on relevant exp only OR total exp and yoe ? i.e. i have only 2+ yrs exp as data scientist (internal switch) and rest is in automation. so will the ctc be given considering me as with only 2+yoe as data scientist or will they consider my prev experience also? cctc 9lpa total yoe 8yrs

I am currently working as a Software Engineer in Data Science domain like ML, QlikSense etc. I have 1.25 yr overall experience and I am from Tier 1 clg but from non-IT branch. I am not much confident about my experience in this domain as startups want more at this much exp and learning is slow in current workrole. So I am thinking to take BITS Pilani Work integrated learning program in Data Science and be here in HSBC for 2 more yrs with limited growth. Will it be right to study or to change?
