Hello everyone, I know someone looking for some perspective, so I’m taking a poll. Would you:

1) take a pay cut to transition from litigation (insurance defense) to a transactional firm; or
2) take a $70k pay increase to stay in litigation but move to a complex litigation firm handling various kinds of defense matters.

You are a two year attorney, with the goal to go in house at an entertainment company or work for an entertainment law firm.

Depends ... but I can say for a fact that it is much harder to go in-house from a litigation role than a transactional role.

like

You should not be getting paid less to work as a transactional associate than at an ID mil. Do trans work but find a place paying decently.

like

I guess it depends on what you ultimately want to do in-house. If you’re looking to have more of a generalist or commercial role, the transactional firm probably gives you better experience. If you are trying to do litigation management type role, the litigation experience could help you. Make a decision based on what’s the best fit for you long term - for example if you really want to go transactional but aren’t happy with this specific offer you could keep job searching for a bit.

Started an in-house job after leaving a firm. I love it. Looking back on my old job, I now realize how gaslighted and manipulated I was. People at the new job treat me with such respect, it feels amazing (also sad that my bar is now so low).

As a result, I'm super motivated to do a good job and deliver, but this is a BIG job, one where I can't come close to clearing my plate every week. I'm working 12 hour days to be as responsive as I can, but I know that's a recipe for burnout. Advice?

How different is litigating in-house vs. in private practice? I’m tired of litigating in private practice and am contemplating a move to an in-house litigation role with a public university—but the pay will definitely be less, so I don’t want to make the switch if it is going to just be the same hamster wheel. Curious to know what others think about the importance of both firm and in-house experience for mid-level positions. I do not have previous large firm experience (did practice as a sole practitioner for several years though - IP, entertainment law) but have five years of demonstrated success as an in-house attorney. Many mid-level postings prefer/require both firm and in-house experience. Is my experience disqualifying from such postings?

How did you adjust to the document management system of your company after being at a law firm? Any in-house attorneys ever consider going into (or back to) private practice at a firm? What are your pro/con arguments? What terms would you consider most important in your decision to go to a firm? For context - I'm 15 YOE and have worked in government, a very large firm, and most recently in-house. I finished a final round of interviews and was expecting a final decision after the interviews. Rather than yes or no, the recruiter told me that the feedback is positive but they need to interview one more candidate to compare since I am the first one interviewed. Do people really ever get jobs through cold interviews from job postings? I’ve been trying it for years, done alot of third-round interviews and such, all generally positive experiences, but every job I’ve ever landed has involved a personal recommendation, warm intro, or someone I’ve worked with at a previous role or as a competitor, etc. A fair number of the jobs I’ve notice go “unfilled” with postings remaining up for months or years after. Most places draw out the process 2+ months.

Those in-house, do you find you had more autonomy in firms? E.g., at firms if I was slow I just took the day off — w/o formally telling anyone — or ran an errand middle of the day and came back and made up the hours. This doesn’t seem possible in-house. It feels like a true “on the clock.” Anyone else?
