I’d start with taking courses that can help you learn more about basic cloud concepts, then look at getting your azure certs if you plan on staying at MSFT. The other recommendation I’d give is connecting with some of the SEs you work with and ask them what courses they have been taking. Good luck!
I second what was said above. I was in sales for 4 years prior to moving to solution engineering and it was the best career move I ever made.
Doing it at your current company is ideal, since it’s more of a pivot (you already know the products).
When I was going into the interview process, I really focused on my experience in a closing role being a HUGE benefit in the SE role. At the end of the day, the SE job is to help win the deal, so knowing how getting the technical win helps with the overall win is really helpful. (The sales leaders you work with will love it too)
Getting off of the quota was great and I still get to be involved in sales cycles. Good luck in the move!
100% agree in every way. I did the same after being in sales for the same tech company for 5 years. Happy with the move every single day. Everything I enjoyed about sales without quota pressure and annoying follow up emails. If you’re technically minded and personable, it’s perfect
Yes, you need to be the technical guy/gal. Moving into pre-sales is the best decision I’ve ever made. Tips, well depending on the company and role, you most likely need to be technical or a sme in something. Great presentation skills and ability to connect with your audience. Also very important is the ability to discover or induce pain in your conversations with prospects/customers. Ideal SE is technical, personable, great presenter and has business sense.
Thank you so much, I appreciate the advice.
Thank you so much for your help!
I will start as cloud sa with msft soon. Reason why you wanting to change path? How do you like it?
Thank you, I will begin to work on that path. I want ro become a Cloud SA since I am unhappy with having a hard quota (have been throughout the majority of my sales career) and find that there are more opportunities for me as a sales engineer. I could be wrong though the future requires you to be become more technical and as an SME within your specific domain. Is my thinking incorrect?
