I am in EY GDS and service line is Tax. Last week my laptop got crashed and IT team going to send me a new laptop. The thing is it will take min 10-14 days to reach in my location and my manager asking me to take leave till that time. Is it same for others or for me , anyone here faced same ??

Also in this situation will it be fine if I convey same to HR. Anybody has any insight ?

I didnt take leave, my manager said it is fine not ur issue , its talent and itmangmnt problem


Send out a mail to your counsellor informing that your laptop has broken down and you’re in talks with IT to get replacement laptop delivered to your place, mark hr, cfl and ccgl. You tell them that you’ll help the engagement teams via the teams phone app as much as possible and are available during working hours. Don’t waste your leaves on this.


Do not worry, send out a mail to cfl/ccgl and hr then, mark your counsellor also. Make sure all conversation is on mail, and not on teams chat.

I can understand your pain but I also understand where the Manager is coming from. Since the scheduling in Audit & Tax teams are pretty tight & do not work like consulting, advisory folks where 20-30% people just sit idle on bench all time of the year specially due to shrinking margins in accounting industry with limited fees size & ever increasing employee costs.

Due to the reasons mentioned above, your manager would be in tough position to get your replacement from EM because since you are still showing that you are available in the system to take up the chargeable work though you are practically handicapped in absence of firm's laptop hence, you are getting such suggestions.

These are usual suggestions which I have heard that everyone gets from Managers & SMs in Audit & Tax at least. Infact recently few staffs in our team had low utilisation & our manager suggested them to take planned leave & work so that they can increase their utilisation & achieve their KPIs.

Also your counselor not supporting you in this case is clear proof of that.

Now coming on to the point where people are suggesting you to go to HR, I would say this would not be a wise act because the response which you have received is not a one off case but pretty usual in EY atleast as of now, hence, HR won't do anything as such or might be possible this time they will take you out of this problem but think long term, you will have to deal with your business team by yourself & they can literally make your life hell if they want to & you, the HR team literally won't be able to do anything in this regard.

Long story short, avoid using HR route, instead try connecting someone with whom you are comfortable with from your team & also who is senior to your manager as well & try taking them in your confidence & only then decide how to proceed with this further.


Same thought also roaming in my mind, Now am not thinking more, after receiving my laptop I will reach out my manager for his suggestion. Already I having bad time with team , unnecessary pressure, lengthy working hours. Some people are sitting from 11 - 11, too much micro management. And now this situation giving me added flavour in my existing frustration.


Why would you take your paid leaves on a firm laptop issue ? That is absolutely absurd. Ask your CCGL or CFL for a code to charge all this to. Communicate over email and record every conversation.

If there is no response, then charge all this time to admin code and mention laptop replacement underway or complete WBLs via your on demand computer.

If your managers and counsellor both pressure you into charging it to paid leave code, then schedule a meeting with the HR.

If you don’t mind me asking, which SSL do you belong to in tax?

All who are saying that do not apply leaves - Please suggest what is the alternative, so that utilisation goal doesn't impact? Or are you suggesting professional to sit idle for 14 days and wait for laptop and still put hours under chargeable/admin?

EY has already opened their offices and professionals are encourage to work from nearest GDS location. So that they can get the laptop repair done quickly in emergency issues.

In current scenario, a professional is taking flexibility by working from remote location and want to be at home and wait for laptop to be arrived. Please note EY is already providing you flexibility by working from remote location. We can't ask all from EY. As an employee, we also have few responsibilities and need to fulfil it.

Ideally all laptop related issues are being handled from your base location from where the laptop was actually issued. And also these protocols exists in all organisation not specific to EY GDS, due to controls laid down internally for IT assets tracking & management.
However, as EY5 rightly mentioned, if things would have been esclated to correct people i.e. your respective PPED in this case, most likely things would have been sorted out for you.

Hi, I am soon to join EY GDS Tax service line and wanted to ask how is the WLB in there and is there any difference in work environment or benefits from consultancy service line ? I am sorry this comment is not related to what you posted but As you mentioned you belong to same service line and you are the first person I saw from there.

It’s the same for all i guess, in consulting the hours are long and expectation is to contribute to internal team projects also.

May be the strategy to sustain here will be under commit and over deliver.
