Consultant at IBM with possibly making around 130k. But here is the deal breaker 1. From 100 percent WFH to 80 percent travel. Is it worth it for the raise 2. Never been to consulting, I have friends and I can see how much they burn themselves 3. I would be working for global business services, is it good. 4. How is the work life balance ? 5. The team I am working at PWC is in turmoil and might not survive but no issues with getting placed within other teams 6. Is it a good move, is it a step down 7. Can we move out from consulting like maybe in 2-3 years.
Travel is not for everyone. Some people love it, some loathe it. Travel does have perks like accumulation of miles and points to the point where you can go on vacations for next to nothing. You also can end up saving a decent amount of money while traveling if you make the right choices e.g. not drinking every night. If your current job is in a precarious position, I would move. Not sure about IBM as I have never worked there but they do have a strong consulting arm
Yup. They hire a lot even when they’re not doing great, and also lay off considerably when they’re trying to make numbers. I don’t have any experience on the tech side though, so your experience may vary
Are you single??? If you have family, think of consulting like a curse when you will be away from home 80% of time. You have to have decent support system for wife/kids in order to make it work. And, yes you can move to local role within consulting.
I don’t have a family yet. I am new to consulting thus I am not sure if I would be able to handle it.
A wise person once told me.. If it feels good do it. If it doesn’t feel good, don’t do it People have different interests. Its up to you to decide whether your life will improve if you switch jobs. For me, i also wfh and value my time. I wouldn’t want to travel 80% of the time to do the same job I could be doing from the couch. Imo thats crazy and a waste of time (the most valuable thing we have). But hey thats just me. You gotta do whats right for you. Good luck with your decision.
I was in this exact position. Went for prestige, locked in to high salary, made my life miserable, almost divorced, etc. Travel lasted 6 months wfh after for many years. Hated it. I hate this expression and will only use it this once....follow your gut.
How are your hours looking currently?
I am not burning, it’s a proper 9-5 job but it doesn’t interest me either since I am not learning anything new
