I've been in practice for about a year at a high stakes plaintiffs litigation firm. I make $85/year, I'm in the office at 8 and leave around 5:30. I work occasionally on Saturdays. When we have something big coming up, I stay extra to get it done in time. I've never missed a deadline.

I had a meeting this week where the partners told me they questioned my commitment because they were working more hours than me.

Am I the problem here and should work more, or is it time to find a new job?

Is it true that product based companies have better work life balance than service based. I recently joined a big IT firm after my MBA in process improvement (quality). After two months of working 12-13 hours a day i realize this is not going to work for me. Looking for something less hectic (like 10hrs a day max). Is it only possible in product based companies?

Me: OT would be cool as the only hourly on my team. Extra money wouldn’t hurt.

Manager: Asks me how much OT is required for me to complete project

Me: Ummmmmm I like my 4:30 off time and playing video games soooo…

Why are the expectations on billable hours so extreme on lawyers? Consulting, accounting and other comparable jobs, apart from investment bankers, are way below lawyers.

And it’s not that lawyers won’t make enough money if they work less - reduce hours by 10% and you’d still be making fortunes as a partner and a small fortune as an associate.

What’s the consensus on tattoos in the insurance workplace? I’m in leadership and considering exploring my options due to recent personnel changes.
