I think it’s a super cool career to build on as we have more and more focus in the area.
With that said, depending on where the organization journey is at, you could be working at very very foundational work ( ie why is hiring 50/50 gender important ) vs quite mature business looking at all scopes of DEI (ie accessibility, First Nations, poc)
IMO - Receipe for success for the role is to engage the right leaders in business to get their level of partnerships
The thing is, it’s a role based in India where in general DEI focus is just on female diversity. So I’m not sure if this is the right career move if all I’ll get to do is focus on one aspect. I’m just 2 years into my careers after post graduation.
Is this role with your current company or external? If external, the most important thing to understand is how much the organization TRULY values DE&I. There are a look of companies trying to focus on DE&I given social pressure that are not truly invested in DE&I and are simply investing in it for external perception. If you find that they are truly invested in the program as a business and it aligns with their culture, than I think it can be an excellent career move.
It is an external role, not in my current company but the culture is said to be really good and I’m trying to draw conclusions that maybe they would take the next step and focus on DEI as well.
Potentially, if the company isn't in it just for show. I think if you're serious about it, you could build great relationships and do some serious networking as well as actually building a career in the field. Just depends on if the company has this position to actually address issues or to put a bandaid on them. I would be especially careful if you're a person of color.
That’s actually a valid point. I’ll definitely consider this.
I think it can be cool IF there is stakeholder buy in. Sometimes it feels like these roles play lip service to DEI without actually bringing anything in. I think it's a role that's definitely going to grow though
I get your point. Thank you so much!
What are your longterm career goals?
I’m working as a PMO in HR since two years. My goal is to be in project management and go further into strategy but I do have an inclination towards DEI.
