Hello HR folks. Overheard a conversation at work and am curious what is the norm.
If an employee goes out on FMLA, obviously the benefits person sends them the STD, FMLA paperwork etc. But is it the maagers responsibility to maintain communication with the person out on leave and to get a timeline on their return or would that be the benefits team? Or maybe the HRBP?

Definitely not the Manager. If you work with a 3rd company like Liberty Mutual, the 3rd party would collab benefits, and return to work confirmation. If no 3rd party then HRBP.

There isn't a third-party administrator. It's done in-house, from what I gathered

I think it really depends on the company. Some places I've worked tasked the manager with the ongoing communication because they felt there was more of a personal connection there. Others left it up to HR. I don't necessarily think one is better than the other.

When I was part of a benefits team, we would check in with our employees out on leave. We also used our disability carrier to administer leaves, and would receive regular updates from them as well.

I would recommend the manager keep in touch with the HRBP regarding the leave of their employee. The manager can also connect with the employee directly especially as you anticipate their return to work and if you anticipate the employee may be in need of accommodations upon their return.

The reason it doesn't go through the manager is generally you don't want the manager to have all the information about the reason behind the leave - especially if its a medical issue. If the EE and the manager have a good relationship and the manager is already aware of the situation, its ok, but still better to do through benefits/HRBP. Whoever sent the paperwork should be the one in communication with the EE

Question for consultants in healthcare, what books have you found helpful in your career? I’m starting soon, but I come from a clinical background, and haven’t been exposed to that much beyond that. I have been doing a lot of reading (mainly JAMA/NEJM articles on policy, HBR articles, Christensen and Porters books on innovation etc). I’ve found them immensely helpful (I’m still early on, so I learn a lot with each new book). Outside of news sources, what books have you found helpful?
Thank you!

I told him 2 other recruiters on my team started when I did. He said he would need to look into it. Today he told me 3 of my HM’s don’t feel supported (despite having the 2nd most hires) and I could either resign or go on a PIP. I’m the only minority on my team have double the req load and supporting the most dept.

My current role is likely being eliminated, so I’ve had to think about what I’d like to do for the first time in a while. I would be fine staying in an HR/TA role, However, I have started thinking about looking into roles with consulting firms. My forte is not in the technical realm, so my question is, when firms State they offer Human Capital services, are they mostly doing just HRIS implementation, or is there more to it from a strategy/development perspective?
