No one is that essential at work. Family and health first.
That's dumb. If you're out for several months (for example, on disability, military service, sabbatical, or family leave), fine, but sometimes emails need to be sent to multiple parties or when someone happens that they need to be generally aware of (but that doesn't require immediate action on their part) and I do not have the time to resend to people who happen to be out of office. It is your responsibility as an employee to catch up on what you missed.

Seem to be overvaluing their self
I appreciate their honesty. It’s true, catching up to multiple threads of conversations is a chore. Just give me the bullet points when I am back.
I will be out until January 3rd without access to my laptop. My email is purged on Dec 31st at 11:59pm. Thanks and please plan accordingly.
I do this without the announcement; lots of emails I file away and tell myself I’ll do something if the person cares enough to follow up.
Same. If I am busy and forget, they will send a 2nd email. I have to send follow up emails all the time, why shouldn't they.
Most emails will be useless by the time the guy arrives. Anything important or urgent, the onus is on the sender.

I don’t understand how he wouldn’t WANT to catch up. 95% he can skim and move on, 5% will be important.
I am mad and calling HR to get this person’s cell phone so I can complain and I don’t even work at KPMG lol

The author of that away message is doing it right. I took extended PTO last year (4 weeks). On my first day back I did a CTRL+A to select my entire inbox, right clicked, marked every email as 'read.' Went and made myself a pour-over coffee.
It felt F%$&'ing amazing!
But you didn’t email that to every person that had emailed you while you were out

I don’t get why he can’t just respond when he returns instead of deleting
I saw a good one today where it said “I’ll be returning X date, please text or call me if you need a response before then.”
Wow. Deloitte Standard
