If you are at a company bigger than 250 people, and you have more than 5 year of relevant experience (not counting not relevant), asking for higher than 155k should be reasonable.
The bigger the company size, the more you can ask.
If it helps - I’m currently mid level making $105k a year and this will be my first official management position (have been unofficial manager many times). I believe I can suggest my title - which could be anything from Senior Product Designer to Design Lead, etc. The salaries range wildly in CO at the moment for these positions - anywhere from $114k - $175k in current job listings.
Curious what size of a bump others have seen when jumping up to management level - even if it’s not in design?
The bump to management question might even be worth posting separately, I feel like it’s an important one and is getting a bit buried here
The title can be negotiated I am pretty sure, the salary range is dependent on where you live and what is the company is willing to pay for. I would check on websites like Glassdoor to see if somebody from your company has posted there to get a feel for the range you can ask for. Not sure if you can just go to your HR and ask the range they give for manager positions. I guess right now take the title bump as gather some experience.
My gut feeling tells me, if nothing else works, take whatever salary they will give you. The leverage that comes with that title often pays off once you decide to switch companies.
An interesting question here is what other managers in your company do. I am sure you don't want to ask people's salaries, but you could start a dialogue with someone you know who is in that position about what got them there, what their title was, how things changed, and if they feel there's a big leap, including in the % of the raise. In some companies a Manager doesn't end up having a whole lot of reports and is more like a title raise, and these aren't always considered like being bumped to management. It all depends on how your company treats titles. If they're pretty turnkey overall, you might have to take whatever they give you, because it might be the same across internal hires.
I would just say, make sure it's an internal hire.
If you're worried the offer will be low because lowballing is common practice at your company, 5% is totally reasonable for a very standard promotion. They might go for 7% if you ask higher. If they pose it, try to add on a bit more to whatever they offer. If they're less generous, they might be more open to smaller numbers and at least you will have gotten some more.
Just wanted to update: my boss approached that conversation without offering a promotion and offering a bump of $3k. I countered and asked for $10k and being promoted to Manager (Senior Designer) and he went to CEO and got it approved 😊
Thanks to all for the support and advice!
