Hello, I have been interviewing and the HR person asked me what salary range ( per HR she didn't want to waste anyone time), I am looking at so I said 175K -200K - she giggled and said the offer would be more - BUT what is she comes in on lower side on my range because I offered up a range? I can counter correct?

Where y’all at to get a salary offer that high 😂 I need that in my life!

likefunnyhelpful

If its in the lower range of their range, but higher than your range of 200K, then whats the issue here? Its a win-win for you regardless of if they give you what you asked for or gave you above your ceiling.

You can always counter!

like

Never give numbers first. Ask for their budget for the role.

I've learned that it is best to let them know that without much more information, it is difficult to make an educated statement on the amount you would expect for the role you are applying for.

Or you can turn it on them, which I believe someone else mentioned, and say that you would feel better knowing more about the position and what the salary range, including benefits, would be for that role.

In this situation, it might be better to ask them the salary range thats allocated for this position. Every company decides a range for each level in the company. If you like the position and the salary range, you give an interview if not, you won’t waste your time or theirs.

like

I agree- I’d they have a range that you are on the lower side of and they have set qualifications to base their range on, you can always counter based on your specific qualifications. They should have detailed information on how they base it, so you can ask to see that at anytime

Sounds like you really underestimated your value. What's the role & industry?

I'd suggest more research you can leverage to counter later.

like

If it is higher than what you expect, doesn’t matter your position in the range at the beginning. If you are lower, your chances to get bigger raises is higher.

Always counter. Most of the time it doesn't matter who mentions numbers first. Most companies give ranges with always wanting to land in the middle, if they care about salary equity amongst employees. So if your lower, don't worry. They will land in the middle. If not, negotiate. Now, if they do land in the middle and you try to negotiate, they will remind you of what you said in the interview, so make sure you have a response ready.

My supervisor is retiring in December and my VP has decided that I will be taking on her role. Although we have never spoken about this, (very strange to me). I have already started training and migrating department account ownership to myself. I think we will be meeting in a week to start discussing salary and strategic planning. I do not know what the Director level salary range is to even prepare for negotiating.

Any good suggestions for how to approach the situation?

Just done a round of interviews.

Any idea when I will hear back?

Do they usually call/email/ping with the decision? In the past it has been ping for a rejection.

Based in the UK if that makes a difference!

Cheers :)

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

I’ve been offered a position that I’m really excited about. Their initial offer was 10K more than the top of the salary range they gave me for the position when I asked during the interview process and at the top end of the salary requirements I set for myself. My partner thinks I should still negotiate for more even though I’m happy with the offer. Am I an idiot if I don’t negotiate in this case? Realistically, I don’t think I’d get much more than that, but should I negotiate out of principle?

I had my first interview today for a director position I would consider a dream role, and it went well. They want me to talk to the VP, but I found out I would definitely have to relocate to a different state to execute tasks.

The salary is within range of what I would accept, but I just moved to a different state.

I want to leverage this, and follow up with the hiring with another place (similar position in my current city and state) I haven’t heard from yet. Do you think that’s wise to do?
