Hello! I started my own shop about a year ago and have an assistant who has been with me for about six months. Her birthday is coming up and I would like to get her something nice. I know cash is king, and I’m fine gifting her that, but I’m not sure as to amount, would a gift card be better, etc.
Any advice is appreciated!

I would do cash or a spa gift card and surprise day off.

The partners at my firm tend to give 35 to 50 gifts for each person's birthday (attorneys and support staff), small flowers, decorate the office, and we do special bday lunch either at restaurant or takeout with a dessert at office like cupcakes

Bonus paid vacation day and/or $100

Are you planning on giving her a Christmas bonus? Since Christmas is only a few months away and she's only been with you a few months, I'd say a $25 gift card to Starbucks is sufficient. I don't generally get birthday gifts for assistants, especially ones that haven't been with me for a long time.

Yes. I will give the equivalent of two weeks pay for Christmas. Thank you!

I joined a new firm October 1 & billed a 200 hour month. With my current workload, I am expecting to meet or exceed my prorated hours target. When I accepted the position, future bonuses were discussed, but given ramp up, etc. I didn’t think to ask about a prorated bonus for my stump year. Has anyone dealt with this before? I hate to ask & sound greedy, but I relocated (at a pay cut) for this position & a bonus would really help going to my mortgage payments I’m still carrying for my old condo.

Question for moms. I’m getting married next year and have several close family members that will have babies ages 8-11 months old by then. What are some ways I can support the moms and make it an enjoyable experience for them? We have a separate room at the venue that I was thinking could be offered to the parents to use, or potentially hiring a babysitter for them (either at the venue or back at the hotel). I would love for the families to be able to come, as it is out of town.

Took my first vacation (1 week) in over a year to visit family. Was bombarded by emails from one partner asking me to complete non-time sensitive motions, which he hasn’t even bothered to review. This is my third firm in three years (first I left as I was severely underpaid, second I left for a 100k increase in salary), but this lack of respect for my boundaries has made me want to move again once I’ve completed 18 mos. Bad? They don’t do this to the other associates (all male).

I was fired last month after a short time at the company. I knew things weren't going well- it was a terrible culture fit & I was also planning my exit strategy. They wouldn't give me specific reasons other than to vaguely say it was performance related. I agree I made a few dumb mistakes (none of any dire consequence) but what kills me is that I tried really hard. I don't want to change careers but I have a deep seeded fear that no matter how hard I try, I will never be a "good attorney".

My husband & I are relocating to be closer to family next year. I always assumed I’d stay in my current role until the move, but things at work have become horribly toxic. I can’t stay in this environment for 10 more months. I’ve thought about trying to find a job in the new state that might let me start remote…but that feels like such a long shot. Any other recs? I’m feeling really hopeless & trapped recently.

I’m currently a junior associate in a boutique litigation firm handling IP. I’ve taken a depo already, will argue in court next month and by all accounts, I am great at it. But I’m miserable. I find the games with opposing counsel exhausting and I despise writing briefs (even if I’m good at it). My pre-law school job was in public relations and I chose litigation because I like to win, but I’m now realizing I like success more than the win-lose. Feeling lost… should I move to transactional?

I hung out this weekend with a work friend of mine. We’re both junior, but I’ve been on FMLA due to an unexpected illness so have been away for a bit. I know that I screwed up on some files before I was diagnosed which I feel awful about and have been trying to rectify (unpaid), but she spent a lot of time cataloguing the ways in which I messed up. It was supposed to be a nice weekend for once and I’m feeling more beat down than ever 😕 just not sure how to get the motivation/nerve to go back!

Recalling my first onboarding meeting in-house with the c - suite. Thinking back now recalling that they would often mention if someone they are referring to is a woman. For example, "Oh we have these two women doing x, y, and z and they do it well, a well-oiled machine." etc. I was the only woman in the room. They did not mention when someone performing a particular role was a man but they did point out when it's a woman, happened about four times. Odd, no? What would you make of this?

Annual review advice?
I feel very secure in my long-term employment and am doing very well. I work at a midsized boutique with a generally solid culture. I’ve been described as “rising star/golden child” etc., glowing reviews. The thing is that I’ve had a tough year with absent mentors, low interaction/training (there are extenuating circumstances with my SA.) Do I mention what changes I need to see to stay here? Or just go along, accept my good reviews and bonus, and keep my head down?
