Hello! I’m a PharmD with 6+ years experience in a clinical setting (hospital) and have been trying to break into the industry realm for about a year and a half now. Can anyone explain to me why it’s so hard?? 😂 Is it normal to take this long to find something? I’ve had maybe 4-5 interviews and the feedback I’ve gotten is they decided on someone with experience or someone internal (recently ghosted by a company after a panel interview as well). Just wondering if it’s worth it to continue trying.

Hello, I wanted to circle back to this post and provide an update! I finally landed an MSL role (Field Medical Director) with Pfizer after about 1.5 years of trying! I start Monday and am grateful for all the no’s I received because this opportunity trumps all the ones in the past! Guess I wasn’t the underdog after all 😉 For everyone still trying, the advice I received of “don’t give up” is true, it’ll happen with the right opportunity at the right time.

like

Sure, I connected with a lot of MSL’s via linkedin and got to know more about the role/ interview process/ any recommendations they may have. Definitely spent a majority of my time networking and trying to get referrals or having someone forward my resume to the hiring manager. I tried my best to learn a lot about the role and have a good grasp on what they actually do. When it came down to interviews, I utilized this book called the MSL career guide- how to break into your first role. Within the book are examples of questions they may ask during an interview and I wrote down my answers to these questions and really focused on the behavioral questions/star method of answering them. I had a list of different “behavioral” situations at work and used the star method to describe the situations. And then ultimately I think just being yourself during the interview and showing/telling them how much you’d love to be an MSL and even describing how hard you’ve worked towards it helped me too!

You are the underdog because no industry experience. You are competing with people who are currently doing the exact same job they are hiring for, e.g. someone going from company X to Y on the same role, or a role that would be a promotion for them.

You can try CRO or consulting as a first step toward the industry

Thanks! This makes sense.

You can order this book by Isaiah Hankel on how to get hired in industry coming from the outside. Remember that 70% of advertised jobs are really for formality to meet legal requirements that interviews are held but they are already earmarked for someone or filled. The key is really about networking, I can assure you there is nothing wrong with your qualifications or experience it is just that industry people want you to speak to them in their language. Having an internal referral bumps up your application straight to the hiring manager or person you'll be reporting to. Network, network and network. I'm in the same spot as you 😂...I've learnt that talking about the technical skills that I have and experience in an academic fashion doesn't land any points with industry professionals. It took a lot of practice but the book in the picture really helped me navigate the road much better. You can also reach out to the guys at Cheeky Scientist, they have a ton of materials that can help you frame your experience in ways that make you attractive to companies in industry.

It is really tough. I am going through the same process, had 2 late stage interviews that just ended up in a monumental crash! It is painful but you just got to keep on and restrategize until you get your foot into the door.

My best suggestion would be to leverage your network, and anyone currently in industry. When I left the clinical setting I was essentially poached, to assist in new drug launch, mostly because of my rapport with MSLs and Sales Reps. You need someone to go to bat for you on the inside. Additionally, you may want to get on a few speakers bureaus with pharma, that will further help in establishing the relationship, and give them a better understanding of who you are.

There are a lot of pharmacists looking to break into industry, what’s going to set you apart…?

Don’t give up. Keep applying and it will work out. My first job took me a year of applying before I got in.

Same here!!! I’m on interview 8+ right now and it’s demoralizing. I think there’s a lot of incest or maybe I’m just making excuses. I’ve even been denied sales positions

Definitely demoralizing!

I genuinely want to succeed at this so if anyone has any advice, please feel free to share.

Should I specialize in Blockchain or AI? I’m a freshman in a CS degree and I can’t decide. My main argument to choose blockchain is the easy entry with little experience and high salary, I plan on growing my skills during the bear market and get a job once the market recovers. Regarding AI, I find this field fascinating but I feel like it requires a lot of experience, degrees and diplomas.
