Hey OP, I’ve done two cross country moves with cats. First time was CHI-NYC flying southwest, and second time chose to drive from NYC to ATL. We chose to drive because the plane experience was pretty traumatic for them, and I do think driving, while they certainly did not enjoy it, was better. If you do fly, southwest lets you bring them on board with you in their carrier and put them under the seat (where you small carry on would usually go). You need to call them to make that reservation. Trying calming chews/anti anxiety meds, but it’s still gonna be really rough for them. If you decide to drive, I found a cool carrier for the car and can send you a link.
We flew in 2017 and at that time Southwest did not require any documentation, not sure if they do now
My vet gave me gabapentin to give my cat by mouth 2 hours before travel, which helps mellow her out a little bit. I agree with M1, look on the airline’s website for their policy on pets, I personally would never check my cat so the carry-on option is a must for me. Book it ahead of time (I had to call once I’d booked my own flight) and be prepared to pay a fee - mine was $125 each way, I believe. Lastly, be aware that when you go through security you will have to take your cat out of the carrier and hold them as you walk through the metal detector, so make sure they’re wearing a secure harness with a leash and you’re prepared to handle them. (That’s my least favorite part, because once my cat almost slipped out of her harness.) It’s stressful but doable!
I’ll ask for a private room for sure. My cat is very sweet but she’s never been outside. She literally freezes and starts crying when she’s in a new environment 🥲🥲🥲

My vet recommended giving my cat half a kids benadryl before the flight. Seems to work.
