Hello, looking to get some advice, I am moving to Bay area, I will be making around $150K, will not have a car for the first few months, what are the safe areas where I can rent 1BR for around $2-$2.5K ? My office would be in Oakland, however, not required to be at office all the time. So I would be commuting using BART for most of the time. Thanks

If you can get a car, look at Alameda. It’s a small little town (actually on an island) 15 min drive from Oakland. No BART but it’s fun for a suburb, pretty views of SF, safe and not crazy pricy.

note if you're single and want to get out. Alameda will feel like a retirement home. especially without a car.

Ok, conteary to others while Bart is not the most pleasant experience I take it almost everyday for work and it is fine. Have your wits about you like you should in any city, but it's not a big deal. I am a small woman.

When I first moved here, I lived in a nice apartment in downtown oakland and did not have a car but did have a Zipcar membership which was really nice for grocery shopping and getting to hiking. You should be able to get a nice secure place in downtown oakland (get something with security/door staff) at that price point, be close to work and Bart, and a lot of cool restaurants and such. I lived alone in downtown Oakland and things have gotten way nicer there since I lived there, but it can be a little rowdy on weekend nights which may or may not appeal to you.

Otherwise, I would probably look at the mission for a fun place to live carless on bart. I live there now and it is great if you want a more urban/nyc type of experience with tons of bars and restaurants.

A lot of these safety issues are really more optics and I'm bothered by the fear mongering on this thread. Is going through i union square my idea of fun? No.

Sure.

Hi, tbh without a car it would be best to be in SF. Having a car is super useful since the public transport here is awful. BART is dangerous

Moraga, Orinda laffeyette area is the best bet

I to am from this area, as well as work in both Oakland and San Francisco as a market manager.
Orinda and moraga laffeyette are all very safe places with no night life but traveling to Walnut Creek about 20 minutes is wonderful.

Bart is also right here to take you to work and back, I highly recommend, but this can be me being biased since I live here

BART feels sketchy. A car is needed for East Bay living. I've lived Lake Merritt area and San Leandro. San Leandro BART is pretty good. Castro Valley, Dublin Pleasanton BART is decent too.
I have stopped taking BART if I'm solo. We recently took it on a Friday evening with our tweens and they were not comfortable with the level of mental unwell being we experienced in SF around market street, Union Square etc.

Do you want to live in the city or in the town?

No preference as long as there is BART and the area is safe

I'm born and raised here and I would suggest considering the weather. Working in Oakland gives you flexibility. If you like heat, Pleasanton/Dublin are on the BART line and it's hot there in the summer. Vs. East Bay Hills (Oakland, Berkeley, Albany) will be 15-20 degrees colder in the summer. Owning a car or having an access to a car is important in the East Bay - if I were in your situation, I'd consider Walnut Creek.

Bought a house in 2018 for 75k and put in 25k. It appraised for 167k, but with the market it’s just sitting (99days, one offer that backed out bc they lost funding). Christian men, why are there so few of you in churches? One seasoned deaconess at my church theorizes it’s because 1) Men who go astray tend not to come back for reasons of guilt, whereas women who do tend to rely on their faith/church families even more for support 2) Many churches are no longer missional. So the sense of purpose, of building something etc. is lost for men. Curious to know what you think, and if you can invite your male friends. We need husbands over here. 😅

Can someone explain how it possibly makes sense to buy, purely from a financial perspective, in sf right now?
