I’m still not convinced that certifications are a scam. I’ve met plenty of people who have a bunch of certs that never really impressed me on the job. I honestly think the motivation for most to get certs is to boost their resume and offset their lack of work experience.
I almost got a PMP certification for that reason when I was looking for new jobs a couple years after college. But to qualify, it required a few years of experience and money (training and fees) so by the time I was able to, I decided it wasn’t worth it for me. I already had the experience as a former Project Manager which is more valuable to me than a piece of paper.
I did get my CSM (Certified Scrum Master) when my former manager told me that the company would pay for everything. Sometimes interviewers bring it up and I do tell them it helped me understand Scrum/Agile methodology better. But I don’t think it really helped me on the job so much as just actually doing the job itself and learning as I go.
Thank you for the insight! I’ll definitely keep this in mind.
As a project manager the most important thing is understanding the methodology and language rather than getting the certificate itself. I have been doing project management for longer than I care to admit, and as long as you know wnat agile/waterfall/DMAIC are and can use the right approach for each project getting the certificate is not necessary in most roles.
The other thing I would say is the certifications go in and out of favor. Six Sigma used to be the methodology that employers would put in job descriptions, now you see most often Agile or Scrum Masters, next year it likely will be sething else.
Your best bet for longevity is just keeping your knowledge current.
Understood, that’s very helpful to know! Thank you!
Is he an Aussie? 🥺
I have an Aussie and he looks very much like a black tri would. But I can also see some other breed in him. Regardless! Super cute boy 🥰
Pmi-acp if agile is your focus.
