Too long to write everything but bullet points I would say are:
* Exciting and a lot of work. It was the best time of my life hands down.
* We were two founders that raised several M and grew team to about 30 before being acquired
* Extremely difficult to get first customer
* Lots of smoke and mirrors to try to raise capital and grow
* If you can avoid raising VC money do it. Otherwise try to minimize how much control/equity you give away
* Got stabbed in the back by my cofounder who I also considered my friend since college.
It’s a double edged sword. For many it’s an inevitability to get their business off the ground and scaling. Also depending on who your VC is, they may have resources to help you succeed.
On the flip side, depending on how much traction you have and how far along you are (which usually will dictate how much equity you give up), you can lose control of the business. They can start dictating the way forward and calling the shots to a degree.
My suggestion - if you can, start generating revenue ASAP so that way you aren’t dependent on outside capital. If you do end up needing outside capital hopefully you’re in a place where you don’t have to give up much equity and can still retain control.
Just my two cents based on my experience.
