It took my guy about 3 weeks to really transition to drinking enough milk at daycare. It was tough, but he will eventually eat.
My ped says the maximum he can go without eating is 4 hours but he just doesn’t feed when in day care . Also he kept crying the whole time .
Any transition tips for a 7 month old ?
I feel bad that I delayed day care this long 😭
Don’t feel bad for delaying daycare. You did what was right for you and your family. With that said, I don’t remember or ped ever telling us a min or max time in between feedings. Our daycare fed babies on demand throughout the day. At seven months they would both bottle feed on demand and baby food at certain times of the day. Transition was transition. As long as baby seems safe, we’ll-cared for, and isn’t having a medical problem then he will eventually settle in to the new routine.
Have you had a conversation with the daycare teacher? I think a lot of the time they will just let older babies hold the bottle and feed themselves. Maybe they need to be more vigilant then: minimizing distractions, move to a quiet corner, hold him, etc.
A couple of things you could try:
1) Is it the bottle? Was he bottle fed occasionally before he went to daycare? If not, maybe try another type.
2) Can you work out with your schedule and daycare to feed him one if twice during the day for a week as part of the transition?
3) Have you started feeding him solids yet? We started with cereal at 5 months and have worked up to all kinds of veggies, meats, fruits. My son just turned nine months and he’s primarily eating solids and prefers to feed himself. He still gets breast milk every 3 hours during the day, although his daycare lady told me he didn’t want his milk yesterday afternoon. Maybe he’s ready for variety? Would he enjoy the challenge or feeding himself Cheerios? Even if he doesn’t eat solids at daycare, you could feed him in the AM and PM to boost his total calories.
Good luck! It’s a phase and you will figure it out! Transitioning to daycare can be a big change so give it a little more time to see if he adjusts. Generally, if kids are hungry, they will eat, so don’t get too overly concerned that he is starving.
^this. I’d take a hard look at 1. Some EBF babies will refuse the bottle and have a harder transition at daycare while they adjust.
Another thing, is baby nursing more when you’re around? Reverse cycling is very common when mom returns to work. Mine both did, even though they were taking the bottle at daycare, they would wake more at night and cluster feed constantly. It’s perfectly normal for your baby to crave and miss the intimacy, warmth, and security of being with mom while nursing.
Hang in there, you’re doing great. Babies are resilient and this too will pass.
