Hey ladies! I took all the 2021 salaries mentioned here and put them into an excel, and wrote an article with some salary insights. Hope it helps. Check it here: https://jesswatts.medium.com/how-much-did-women-make-in-advertising-2021-7bc23dc1b423?sk=b44b924ec3a87a354aba134428eed455
Hey, me again, the lady who compiled those 2021 salaries 🤑👋🏼
Over the last year I’ve been working with UCLA on the first academic study in over 30 years on pay gaps in the American advertising industry.
And our research needs you!
Take the anonymous pay equity survey: https://lnkd.in/gTx2dGRi
Strategy, 14 yrs NYC $420K base. Starting salary was $80K. On the healthcare side. This is an interesting thread that I’ll be following.
MCS2 I have global management responsibilities over a 200 plus team with about 20 direct reports. I have a lot of new business responsibilities, overseeing the strategy within the pitches across all the agencies in the network. I also work to ensure that we’re giving current clients the best of what we have to offer. Then there’s the working groups to ensure we’re refining and evolving our offerings to meet the changes of the market. I’m involved in thought leadership projects and then there’s the financial management of the team in terms of billability and SOW’s etc. Most importantly, is the career development of the direct reports and making sure that they are developing people appropriately. Those are the major parts.
So uh, who else is deeply depressed and feeling increasingly inferior over this thread?
There are so many people out of work in advertising that salaries have really dropped. NYC ACD salaries were starting at 150. Now 120. When/if things pick up salaries should adjust again. Sadly salaries are moving backwards now.

CD nyc 260
Total
Sr. Art Director - NYC - $120k
People told me that was an impossible salary to make for me and that I was being greedy. Asked around and found out other male creatives with my similar experience were making at least that. Found an agency that values me finally!! Before I was making 70k.
Senior Designer 135k NYC, it’s possible!
I feel poor. Lol. 🤣
Every market will seem low compared to the US unless you work somewhere like Switzerland.
SVP acct/strategy 20+ years $198k Texas
Found out a male same role less experience is making $248k
SVP acct 18 years $225K Los Angeles plus 10% discretionary bonus
Here’s my salary history from the past 10 years. I’ve been working for about 20. I’ve learned not to chase the paycheck and have taken cuts for opportunities/life priorities.
$200k - mid sized holding company agency
$275k - large holding company agency. Toxic. Not worth the paycheck.
$260k - large hc agency. Messy.
Had a baby.
$230k - small agency. Toxic.
$250k - large hc agency. Toxic mess.
$220k- brand side. Lovely people and low stress. Wouldn’t leave for another agency no matter how big the paycheck.
Please tell us how you made the jump to in house!
Client side copywriter (tech). 4 yrs exp. 200k. NYC.
Equity is stock options
SVP , $300k. NYC.
SVP of what? How many years of experience? Is this base salary and do you get bonus too? Thanks for the insight!
junior designer, 55K in texas. leaving for an in-house art director gig and doubled my salary. call me a sell-out but i got bills to pay lol
@Junior Art Director 4 omg no i should've clarified, my previous job was in austin -- the in house one is in california which is probably why its higher
AAE, $36,500 lol
I started at 30k as an AC in 2016 in Chicago. That’s a pretty solid number for an AAE.
Starting a new role tomorrow at 100 as an AS. Honestly feels like I have spent the last almost 7 years fighting tooth and nail for myself, in every aspect- salary, toxic environments, harassment, manipulation and retribution... on and on and on. I told myself (and my father) at the start of the year, in the midst of yet another disappointment and another battle to be fought that I WOULD break six figures this year. I WOULD. We both said okay, but there was very little faith left to hold those words up. I was made an offer at 100 even- reading this thread, maybe I should’ve tried to negotiate or push a little more, but I was and am just TOO FREAKING STOKED to give it much thought. Still can’t believe it. Now just to find out how long that feeling lasts.. fingers crossed this is a good one in all the ways 🤞🏻Wish me luck!
Senior copywriter in NYC, 120K
Rising Star
CD NYC - Was full time on 250K but then laid off due to COVID (and let’s be honest, politics). Now getting more as freelance.
Rising Star
If I work the same number of days then I’ll make about 1.5x my old salary. But that depends on if the work / demand is steady. So far this year it has been thankfully.
Strategy, 15yrs 260+bonus
How much is bonus? What type of agency?
Miami, AD. 6 years of experience. Just got a raise to 75k baby! Not bad. Although my progress in the pay-scale has been slow, it’s been steady. It’s been mentally challenging not to feel like shit when you know what some of your other coworkers make when they make much more than you, but comparison is a joy thief.
I stopped comparing and just focused on being ok and being better. Slowly but surely it got noticed.
I put in all the effort to have a better attitude.
Got therapy, started antidepressants, shit’s good. It hasn’t been easy or quick for me, but I’m grateful to be where I am today.

I’m in Miami too! The market is rough for us in terms of wages not matching cost of living.
300k, Freelance ACD/AD, NYC (remote), 12 years
It’s my first year freelancing and while it’s been hard finding work I manifested a long term gig - aka busted my ass off to impress the team- and I’ll be making $300k by the end of the year, wich is literally the most money I’ve even made 🙀( I was making 145k at my full time job).
Also double dipped here and there for a few months. Super grateful, hope next years will be better or at least the same 🫶🏼
Applause!! I’m a nyc CD making about 145 now in a small agency. I admire you!
Senior Director of Social Strategy, NYC, 200k
How did you get where you are today? I am a recent grad, and have been a Digital Marketing Coordinator for 9 months, doing Marketo automation and building email and webinar campaigns. I’m interested in brand and social strategy, but don’t know how to get there.
Do writer CDs make less than art CDs or does it all come together at a certain level?
They’re paid the same
