Help! I have 10 years experience split between claims for large carriers and most recently as a successful producer on the agency side. I’ve been applying for underwriting roles but not getting nearly the consideration I had hoped for. My skill set I believe would make me perfect for a production underwriter role but I’m coming up empty. What am I missing? Any referrals would be greatly appreciated

Maybe try going for a UA or entry level UW position at a smaller regional carrier.

Who is your target audience? A lot of the times big traditional carriers and the same for the insurtech startups are looking for designations. CPCU is time consuming and worth pursuing if you add yourself in UW in the long run. You could also consider getting your ARM designation. It’s not too hard.

like

I do have an action plan to earn the CPCU designation, but that will take time (as you stated) and financial investment. I’m just surprised that my prior experience and transferable skills hold no weight it appears. Every job description wants you to have strong sales & customer service ability but then they seem to just write off my claims and sales experience all because I have no underwriting experience per se or designations on my resume. And every interview recently is like I’m getting interrogated by the FBI. It’s killing my self worth and any confidence I have left

Any contacts you can leverage from the carrier side? It’s sort of a tough position as I feel companies want to build underwriters from scratch or hire someone with some relevant experience. I agree with CPCU - maybe look into AU designation?

like

I am a broker with 4 years of experience in commercial insurance. I have both CPCU and ARM designations. I recently was able to get an underwriting position, but it wasn’t a easy process even with those designations. I would recommend you to keep applying, and maybe start with UA or Junior underwriter position first. There is chance as long as you are getting interviews.

I've been working at a government agency for 6 months, helping to stand up a new team. The job involves interacting with real estate developers. One of the developers reached out to recruit me for a similar position that will pay more than $50k my current salary. I feel guilty, especially since I'd interact with my current team on the other side. It's a hard to turn down that salary, though I feel guilty since my team is thin, and it's only been 6 months!

Any tips on navigating this situation?
