HELP: I have been a TA for 5 yrs, and prior my role was HR/recruiter.I have tried to get out of TA and move into HR but I am having a difficult time. I have applied to entry level HR roles, simply to “start” fresh, and have not seen any luck for 2yrs.It’s not that I don’t like TA, but my company has no growth option and I am stuck at a dead end, unless a magical spell is casted. I have also applied to other TA roles as well, in hope to get industry experience. How can I better market myself?

Both TA and HR have relatively flat structures, but I agree that HR has more mobility within it. That said, I have moved out of TA twice and always come back to it, as I have found what I don’t like about it usually also exists in other roles and I am a really good recruiter/that is what I am meant to do :) Network, network, network. If you can’t move internally, find people who have moved from your company with whom you have had good relationships and let them know your goals. In the meantime, work on finding ways to make your role as interesting as possible. Get to the point your hiring managers and candidates say X is the BEST recruiter I have ever worked with...how can you streamline processes to make that happen? How do you build relationships in your industry to make recruiting easier etc...

Completely agree!! If you aren’t getting any bites with applications, network with people who have made the jump that come that we’re at your company, or others that are in the same line of work that made the move from TA to general HR.

Connect with hiring managers that you worked with in the past and who are not with the company anymore. Tell them you want to move into HR Generalist/ Partner role. They may make a glorified intro to their current HR. Everybody is looking for a HR with great HRBP connection. But being honest I moved into HR Generalist inside. I picked up onboarding first, I just said how about I do onboarding too, started to hanging out with HR Admin and L&D, and eventually my boss saw me as an HR Generalist. You need to show that you’re not a transactional, but transformational

What have you done to demonstrate your knowledge and ability for the jobs? Also what specifically within HR? Hr business partner? Generalist? Compensation specialist?

I understand that your current company may have no growth option, however I recommend you try to learn as much stuff you can under the HR function. This way when you apply for other roles you are bringing some of your expertise over into the new role. You should also look at companies that has the filler from TA to broader HR.

How about HR certification? That will show you are serious and have the knowledge to work in HR.
