White colleagues have this going on all the time and make a joke of it. Just give her a heads up...but not in anything written

@A1 OP is just looking out. I would appreciate that from another black person. Nothing wrong with that.

You explained it much nicer than i would have lol thanks
I get you’re trying to look out for her (right!?). This is life and has been for now for a while... Myself (consultant) and one of my government counterparts who are imperative to our programs and both have our young kids home (I have 3). We have calls multiple times a week with at times up to 200 ppl on the line. It’s inevitable to at all times have no background noise even when we stay on mute as much as possible. I have stories for days... 🤦🏽♀️ But, at the end of the day we’re doing our work and managing everything at home the best we can. If she is performing I think you should take a different approach and be more of a vocal advocate for her. She should be f’ing applauded. This is not easy, we definitely didn’t ask for this and ppl need to put themselves in her shoes or shut up. If she is having a hard time, have a conversation with her and see if there are times where either her kid naps or she can get more quiet time, transition who is hosting etc. People have their damn dogs barking in the background all the time.... 🙄

Thanks ill do that! I would hate for her to get dinged on the low for it... i found myself today getting agitated too but i had to stop myself and realize idk what position shes in
I'd give her a heads up that folks have noticed. Things like this happen occasionally on the phone with my white co-workers, but they usually apologize and we all keep it moving. I could see how it might be annoying if it were constant. One of my co-workers has young twins and he does a lot of the child care during the day. He mentioned there are apps that will mute your background noise and that he likes it because he knows his home life is chaotic AF right now. Maybe suggest your coworker look into something similar.
I don't know but I can ask, I'll post on this thread tomorrow.
I don't understand what her being Black has anything to do with her circumstances. Are you two the only Black members on your team and you want to advocate for her 🤔, or are you trying to reduce the chance of a low performance review for her as a fellow Black colleague? You could ask her if there's any schedule that she could work with where the meetings won't be disrupted, but with people WFH as a requirement, your team may just have to deal.
We have 3 kids and Yh, if you have zero , it’s hard to relate but everyone knows this is an unprecedented COVID year . WFH plus juggling kids is intensely crazy, you & your colleagues need to take a chill pill & relax - even clients get this. Like everyone mentioned , might be prudent to just chat with her. Ultimately it’s not really a big deal tbh.

Is she facilitating?

No we would have status calls where she would be required to answer questions or provide updates... every single time she unmutes its chaotic

Have you spoken with her about it? Just curious. Not sure what she can do...

In passing she brought up that she wants to save on childcare because its expensive. Ive also heard her boyfriend speak to her while were on a call 🥴
Tbh id just tell her straight up to go on mute until she speaks.

Ummm tell ur team mates to relax. If she is getting the job done then cut her a break. It’s hard juggling all of this and work.
