HELP! I need graduation gift recommendations for my niece. She just graduated from Med School and is starting her residency (family medicine) in a few months. Edit: I don’t want to give her money or a gift card

Not sure how much you want to spend, but we gave my niece a $500 airline gift card with the express condition that she use it to take a relaxing vacation before her job started. She really loved the gift because she wouldn’t have spent her own money on a plane ticket but really needed the break after school ended.

A nice stethoscope ( if she doesn't have one). They can be engraved or personalized in another way.

Was about to say this.

Money or gift card so she can buy medical supplies, uniforms, shoes, etc… she will need. Unless you all come from wealth. She’s probably broke with school.

We don’t know your niece, so we have no idea what she would like.

The best graduation gift that I got was a really nice tool kit! It sounds silly but it was nice to have and helped me to feel independent/empowered in my new start as a young woman in a new city, new apartment, and new career. 10 years later and I still have and use it.

This is such a great idea! 100% going to do this in addition to another one of the great recommendations!

A nice pen

A second embroidered personalized white coat with Dr. __

A nice planner book for her residency

Remarkable tablet - if she prefers to take notes digitally

I got a ReMarkable this year. Very useful for specific note taking tasks.

Figs scrubs

I heard an ad for them on a podcast!

A standing desk

I never understand why people don’t like the idea of giving money or the equivalent of money.

In a transaction, gifts are inefficient relative to cash from a purely economic perspective. (Cash can be used by the recipient in the way they best see fit.)

But gift giving is commonly seen as less so a transaction and more of a relationship building act - so adding in ideas from the context of your relationship to what you give adds more meaning and hence value (that's not necessarily described by the gift's dollar value).

You can get her something small (some nice chocolate) to go with money or a gift card if you think that money alone isn’t enough, she likely has a ton of debt, and if not residents still make peanuts

Gift something from Amazon with a gift receipt.

Try to be personal. An elegant white gold bracelet if she wears brackets for example. When my brother got married, I bought them a painting!

I've been in PeopleOps (mostly focused on TA Ops) for over 9 years now. I've somehow gotten by without a degree in HR or a certification, but would like to get some more education to continue to advance my career. What are your thoughts on PHR vs SPHR vs SHRM for someone with my years of experience and current role as a manager?

My principal allows other teachers to place students in my classes without any input from me including data or plain old common professional courtesy. What would you do if that happened to you?

My current role started out as a way to increase my skills, but for the past year the majority of what I’ve done is transcribing data between systems, which is one of the things I’m very bad at. My brain switches letters/numbers. With some recent changes, all other responsibilities were removed. I had a good reputation in the company before this, but now every day I feel like a failure because I keep making mistakes.

I'm 11kg overweight for my height with a BMI of around 28.5. I'm hiking, walking up various peaks and ensuring that I get my heart racing the past 3 days. In some muddy/slippery places, I put weight on my left leg to prevent a 60 ft drop, knee took a lot of impact. Pity that attempting to be more active also leads to injury.

What do you recommend, a diet using the calorie deficit method? Looking to go back to gym, hit the heavy bag & lift weights from Monday.

I’m so lonely I forgot what feeling wanted feels like. It’s almost as if I’m numb to the human need of feeling desired and I’ve accepted my fate of solitude.
