Help! I pretty much live in my office… and yet it still feels like a generic 14x14 box. Some diplomas and a few pieces of office art just don’t make it feel like the home it needs to be. I need some inspiration!

Please post your pictures of cute decor, organizational items, seating, shelves etc that are realistic for a small size office and will up the “feels like home” factor.

Pictures of my office plants for attention and example of how “cute” challenged I am. Ignore the carpet stain 😬

It doesn't really photograph well, but have a lot of lamps and alternative sources of light so that I don't need to turn on the big fluorescent overhead lights.

Oh I am all for this. Some people say my office is "dark"...no it's just not ultra florescent bright because I use other indirect lighting sources. Softening the light can make things homier.
I also have added a small fountain by my plants. Gotten a lot of complements.
Also put an area rug in front of the desk which just adds a personal touch.
I have some photo artwork gifted to me by one of the retiring partners. I like it so it's up on the walls too.

When we were in the office- yes - all the time. I brainstorm and work through strategy with business folk etc - I even use my glass walls for strategy mapping if I run out of space :-)
One of the hardest things for me of wfh was not having a whiteboard - we use MIRO but it took some getting used to!

My aunt makes beautiful, detailed dolls wearing traditional Korean clothing. She has given me a few, and my husband doesn’t want them displayed all around our house, so I have them on shelves in my office. Similarly, he has a small decorative skateboard halfpipe that I don’t want displayed at home, so it is in his office.

I have this awful couch in my office that was there before I started. Apparently this couch has a history and the office manager refuses to move it….so I’ve covered it with pillows from target hahaha.

In my previous office, I had little things like cute book ends (ceramic pineapple with gold leaves) to hold up my rule books and other boring work stuff. I also swap out any generic pen/pencil cups for anything colorful….I found kitchen jars at home goods that are about the same size as pencil cups but they are pink and add a pop!

like

Omg I promise it’s not!!! I think I have the smallest desk furniture in the firm and so they stuck it in here to take up some empty space lmao….my boss makes fun of all the pillows but at least I don’t have to stare at this sad couch that is rumored to have made it’s rounds. I definitely second the blanket idea!!

Post Photo

I have a nice throw blanket folded over the back of my desk chair - I feel like it makes my office look a little bit more homey because it’s one of the first things I see when I walk in! (It also doubles as something to drape over my legs when I get cold because my office is an icebox haha)

On a big zoom call this morning. Child walks in fully naked and COVERED in marker. I mean face, legs, hands, everything. Even better, I didn't hear them right away and a coworker had to let me know they were there via chat. Turned around and my kid looked like a soldier in army paint. Not my finest parenting moment since I just pushed them out into the hallway and continued with my meeting. Sharing the shame here

Motions
I work in a midsize firm and we have the basic subscription to westlaw, which doesn’t include the ability to see filed briefs, motions, etc without incurring additional costs. I’m wondering if there is a service in the NJ/PA area that gives you access to previously filed motions and briefs? So if I’m drafting a summary judgment I could search the service and find a similar one. If this doesn’t exist.. I think I found the next million dollar idea lol

I’m in a practice group that is predominantly male. I’ve lost a lot of motivation and am feeling depressed, partly because my partners’ emails consist of 1-3 words (e.g., “thx”). Phone calls are rare. I notice a huge difference in my mood whenever I work with the one person who sends emails with actual sentences. So I guess I’m just wondering... what causes partners to email like that? Is it an ego thing? It sucks to get that after I worked crazy hours all weekend after a rough week.

I desperately need advice. About 4 months ago, I interviewed for my dream job at a firm that sounds like it would be the perfect fit and wonderful to work for (Firm 1). I followed up, but never got a definite response one way or another. I then recently interviewed with Firm 2 which also seems great but is not as geographically desirable. I accepted an offer with Firm 2, and signed all documents and am waiting for conflicts to clear. (Cont.)

I am an associate at a mid law firm doing mostly patent lit. I like the work and getting paid close to the market rate, but I don’t think I’ll want to keep working like this in several years when I have kids. I don’t have much interest in making partner, at least at this point, and In house sounds like a bad fit for me. I’ve never heard of part-time work in this field and I’m not sure what to do. Of course I’d be willing to take a pay rate cut, but hopefully not an extreme one. Any ideas?

Are there basic primers on makeup (pun intended)? I have never been big on it and don’t even know what a concealer is or how to apply mascara. YouTube videos are so intimidating. Can I just walk into Sephora or are they going to upsell 7,000 unnecessary things because I’m a sucker? Firm is relaunching the website and making everyone re-take photos. Better yet, can I just walk into a salon before the shoot and have someone do it?

If you could ask for anything at your firm - what would you ask for? Caveat: something that is a stretch but realistic. Background: There is some current turmoil and I have been identified as someone they want to stay through it and wait for it to get better. We don’t have many females at the top. I don’t qualify for equity based on current metrics but the metrics used have lots of room for improvement and the current metrics could be “ignored” for me potentially. (Cont)

New attorney here! Aside from big law, what are the most lucrative jobs for attorneys? Preferably jobs that don’t require a big law or clerkship headstart. I’m starting out in ID, which is low paid and not practice area of interest. But it was the first position I got with a GPA below 3.0. At what year do such positions make $200,000? There was comment here that eluded to there being many jobs out there that pay well, so I’d like to know all those options.

Anyone else out of the legal profession for awhile? I last worked in a firm in 2008, co-founded a nonprofit, which was very successful but requires a lot of travel. I left in 2015 after having a late-in-life 3rd baby. Since then I’ve been doing freelance legal writing, but it’s time to jump back in. It feels like I’m starting at the beginning all over again and in many ways I am. But I also have 20+ years of legal and professional experience. It feels like such an awkward space. Any tips?
