The approach you take and what’s important to you, is your choice alone. If you want advice on something or are interested in learning more about something then you can make that happen. Nothing is more annoying than unwarranted feedback!! If something is stressing you out then set boundaries and/or take a break from “researching” or whatever. While there are things you can do in your third trimester that can help lactation, you have time to worry about these things later if it’s too overwhelming right now. I do think it’s important to get educated beforehand, but that doesn’t have to be through the mouths of friends/family if you don’t want that.
I personally loved the e-learnings our OB / hospital offers on the subject. Backed by science, no opinions, and no annoyances you may feel from family / friends
Related to breastfeeding specifically? Honestly I wouldn’t count on it. Since we didn’t grow up seeing breastfeeding in public we don’t know anything about it (it’s not entirely intuitive) and planning to see a lactation consultant when you get home from the hospital is really smart.
No it’s not important to follow your parents/in laws advice always but they have been through it, it’s worth listening and taking note and then you can decide something else if you want.
I watched one online course and followed a few lactation accounts on Instagram (COVID baby). Because I didn’t have any major issues, that plus the small amount of help I got from the hospital LC was enough.
If you’re having any issues, which you’re not gonna know until you’re actually doing the thing, then I’d hire a lactation consultant. Your OB or hospital can probably recommend one.
