Here comes a loaded question: daycare vs a nanny, and why?

I’ll be looking for nanny. I am worried about the cost difference but I want to delay day care as long as possible. Main reason is I don’t want baby to be sick 24/7 and obviously they get less attention than one on one. I know “it build immune system” to get sick but I see my friends struggling with their kids just getting one sickness after another, which in turn just keeps the parents up weeks at a time.

Agree, I spoke with docs about this and in a sense it build up their immune system against a particular strain, but since there are hundreds of strains out there, it doesn't really matter and all ends up evening out anyways by grade school

Daycare. So much less mental load to coordinate someone else in your home. Drop off and complete focus for the day!

Definitely an appealing plus for day care, thank you!

We have both. My oldest just started daycare when she turned 2. My infant is home with a nanny. Toddler brings home illnesses all.the.time. From daycare. We’re all sick, all the time. You can’t avoid it. She never had a cold in her life until daycare. But! I LOVE daycare so much!! She learns so many fun things, plays so many different things and loves her friends/teachers. She gets so much JOY from going. Nannies are great but they can’t offer all the same interaction and development as kids get older. I do like Nannie’s for the younger years to help keep them on their schedules better and keep them close for nursing (versus pumping which I personally dislike).

Pros and cons of both. Nannies are more work to manage but kids tend to get sick less. And ultimately quality is what matters more than anything. A mediocre nanny is way worse than a good daycare. And a mediocre daycare is way worse than a good nanny. We’ve done both throughout the years of our 3 kids. Ultimately I have a slight preference for daycare because it was less work for me and slightly more reliable. And I personally liked having more than one adult in the room? Something about multiple points of failure was reassuring to me.

No family members who are stay at home moms or dads that could watch the kid? I prefer nanny over daycare - pay at daycare is low and well in kost cases equates to those not really caring about their job or your kid

like

Nope, both full-time in consulting

Nanny for first 18 months for less germs and getting baby on a schedule. Socialize with friends’ babies on weekends. Daycare after that for convenience/cost/socialization.

I can’t speak from experience, only what I’ve witnessed.. but one friend sent their child to daycare and one with a nanny. The child with the nanny got much less socialization than the child at daycare and has fallen behind significantly from a development perspective because quite frankly, she’s not playing and learning from other kids. If you go the nanny route, I would also factor the cost of having said nanny taking them to classes or groups for play time that are educationally structured.

Totally agree - it’s a very small sample size anecdote!

I'm Black. I'm frustrated with my team, and this is a point in time where displaying frustration, tactfully, is needed. However I'm afraid to do so, because I am Black. I don't want to be seen as angry or too intense. I have white males on my team that I lead and it's...a balancing act to say the least. Do you look at passionate and intense Black people as very aggressive? Have you ever worked with a passionate, intense and frustrated Black person that was the leader of your team?

How will this industry change? A good perk of the job (and added incentive) was travel, racking up free vacations, and working all day in cool cities and all night in nice hotels. How are firms going to motivate employees to work long hours with no travel perks, tiny local offices, and tiny bonuses?
